Xanax Addiction

by Conejo's Friend, Nov 20, 1999 12:00AM
I am 51 years old, I have  been treated by my primary physician for CHF. For 19 months.  Besides loop diuretics  I have been taking 1 mg Xanax  3 times a day, and Serzone  250mg daily. for panic attacks and chest pain. I have had every test known by my cardiologist including heart catherization. So now my physical condition is “all in my head”. Now my doctor wants to up my dosage , have me see a shrink and possibly go to stronger meds. I can’t work, think straight, walk straight,  My doctor also recommends “maybe the cardiologist missed something” so let’s do all the test over again. I’m freaking out on this situation.  I’m not a good patient, I panic over going into a hospital…..I want off the drugs…I want my life back.  Any  suggestions?

SERZONE IS PRESCRIBED FOR MILD DEPRESSION.
IT IS NOT A DRUG FOR ANXIETY ATTACKS LIKE THE XANAX.
I WOULD RECOMMEND SEEING "TWO" NEW DOCTORS.

I am only 32 years old and have severe panic attack disorder. I have been on xanax for 12 years now. I too have had every test done on my heart and only found nothing. I take xanax and depakote daily to control my mood swings and panic. Like the others suggest, I would see a couple of doctors telling them exactly how you feel because anxiety/panic is very serious and you can feel like you are going to die. Don't give up yet, they just might be right.

Hello,

I am a 34 year old male who has been recently prescribed Xanax (Alprozolam) .25mg. For Anxiety and panic attacks. I have hav mild occurances for a few years now, but within the last 6 months have gotten worse. In that time I have been experiencing irregular heartbeat and palputations, which test results have proven to be all negative for heart disease. So, I naturally felt that because of the panic attacks and/or Anxiety, were possibly causing the irregular heartbeats, so I went back to my family MD and he put me on Xanax. My question, is Xanax the proper medication for me or not? And is ther any bad side effects
from using it???  I'm not sure what I should do, since my doctor will most likely keep me on the Xanax for a while.

Thank you.

i am a 30 year old male with sever panic attacks and moodswings. i am prescribed 3 1 mg xanax monthly but take much much more then prescribed, in a regular day i take 8 mgs of xanax. i am growing very concearned about this problem . mostly cause i went threw a series of with drawings, only if unable to get xanax. i was told that i could have seizures if i try to stop, as well as never being normal again due to alll the intake of the (anxiolytic). Alos i do not swallow them any more i am a snorter which has repercussions of thier own. i am scared about what my future will be like if i try to stop. i am afraid to go inpatient, and i also am afraid that i will suffer the rest of my life with these panic attacks. i am torn cause i upped my dosage after having a traumatic experience involving infidelity in  my marriage which is on a slippery slope down ward spiraling. i am afraid to live with out them! i have been taking at night time a supplement tea called valerian its helpful, but when i am out of xanax i still dry heave and sweat and all the rage i have bottled up is released . i am a danger to anyone around me  if i am not sedated. will it always be this way, can i be fixed?

I'm 40 and have CHF and a mitro valve replacement and a pacemaker. I was on xanax but my doctors put me on a drug less strong and it has helped. I'm now taking a low dose of clonapam and it doesn't make me sleepy or any of the other symptoms like xanax did. The main problem with having CHF is you have to watch your salt intake and take water pills daily to keep off any extra fluids so it doesn't build up around your heart and lungs. You should let your dr know how this medicine is making you feel and there is other meds to help with aniexty.

Listen, CHF, as well as many other heart problems can cause anxiety related to the heart not working properly.  Not to mention, just knowing you have a heart ailment.  I would be seen by another cardiologist first to make sure that you're heart is functioning properly.  A lot of people don't know this, but it is possible to have a disease or condition and be well.  You should have an echocardiogram among any other tests.  CHF can lead to other problems as well.  When your body isn't getting enough oxygen, or the heart is working too hard, anxiety can result.  Your valves should be checked and will be if you have that echo.  Get a second opinion, by a good cardiologist.

I am a 46 year old woman who has been taking Xanax for approximately 8 years on and off.  More on for the last 3 years.  I have finally cut myself down to 1.5 mg per day.  I take to much on some days then I run out before my next prescription can be filled and I am filled with panic, sleeplessness and a total inability to function.  My doctor is aware and has been patient with me, helping me and trying to cut down on the dosage.  I notice that lately the drug makes me depressed, sleepy, moody, lethargic.  I am having a hard time with all this.  Any suggestions.  Deb
