Xanax withdrawals?!!

Xanax withdrawals?!!

Wassup, I'm a regular on the Anxiety Forum.  My doc recently gave a prescription of Xanax (1mg)  3 month supply.  Only took it 3 times, then decided to do some research.  Wasn't getting a whole lotta info in the anxiety forum about xanax, thought i come here, figure you guys would have more experience...

I've been reading the posts.  I never freakin' knew xanax withdrawal could be that dangerous.  My doc never said a word about addiction or withdrawals!  WOW!

Welcome to the forum. Your dr. should have told you that xanax was addictive. It's a benzo and they're very hard to w/d from. I took valium (same class of drugs) for 13 years and when my dr. said to stop taking them I did. He said they weren't addictive. We know better know. Google valium and it will tell you a lot I'm sure. When I stopped, I couldn't eat, sleep, or function to any extent at all. I ended up in the hospital for three weeks. That was years ago and I take 1 mg xanax now four times a day. This dr. has no plans to discontinue it. She said I'm depended, not addicted to them.

Please get as much info as you can before you're addicted to the xanax and talk to your dr. about it.

Take Care...LS

My doctor never said anything about withdrawls either but there are definetly withdrawls. I only took it for 10 days and when I stopped cold turkey I couldn't sleep or eat for 4 days. I am starting to do better now but when I look back on things I wish I would have never started taking the xanax, there are other ways to deal with anxiety without taking drugs. Good luck.

Unfortunately many doctors do not mention the dangers of withdrawal when prescribing a benzo. They will usually tell you about the dangers of withdrawal when you wantto stop taking them or often times just tell you not to stop taking them suddenly and tell you how to taper and for how long.

Raine, this is probably why you didn't hear much info. in the anxiety forum, I'm guessing not a lot of people trying to get off of their medication so much as trying to figure which ones are actually working for them.

Just remember, though there are a lot of loopholes in our legal system, your doctors ARE liable for what happens to you if you are prescribed a benzodiazepine. The reason you do not hear of this is because doctors and hospitals ALWAYS settle out of court. I think I can remember 2 times my mother actually went to trial for a doctor or hospital. They cannot afford to destroy their reputation and very very few families ever turn down the thousands and thousands of dollars offered to them to drop charges and then it never even makes it to the press.

Another unfortunate point is that too many people just aren't aware of what the withdrawal from these meds actually do and just have no idea of the liability that these doctors carry.
