addicted mom to be

by saraheden, Oct 29, 2007 03:31PM
I just found out I am pregnant like 6 hours ago.  Tomorrow was my suboxone appointment.  I also found out that they will not give me suboxone while pregnant.  The nurse said that he could offer a taper?  Does that mean he is going to prescribe me meds and taper me down....or he will offer me a plan, and then I have to find my meds illegally like I have been doing for the past year?  Please help.  I am so confused and scared.

Only talk to your doctor about this don't take any other information.......

You also might want to touch base with your OB doctor too......

DO NOT CONTINUE USING WHILE PREGNANT.   Your line "and then I have to find my meds illegally like i have been" scares me.  I used occasionally while pregnant (way before I was addicted) and my daughter is ok but it's not worth the chance.  I would assume they are going to taper you down, hopefully by having you come in daily and get your dose.  Be honest with them and yourself.  If you can't handle them sending you home with a script and taper yourself, tell them!  And tell your OB.  You must know that they take your blood alot when your pregnant and if they happen to find out your using and you didn't tell them or even worse, they test the baby when it's born, you are looking at problems you can't even imagine.  Please don't risk having your baby taken from you the second it's born just to get a little high......Sorry if that's harsh but it's because I sincerely don't want you to do something you will always regret.   Congratulations by the way!   - Sandra

I've never been on Sub i am pregnant and on methadone. I have a friend who was on Subutex and she was put on Methadone instead of Sub. I don't know if that is suitable for everyone but her Dr told her that Methadone was safer in pregnancy than Sub. Friend didn't have any problems when she changed to Methadone but was a bit upset about it as she had been on methadone previously, tapered down on methadone to a dose that dr thought would be ok for her to change to Sub. This was approx 5 month previous to finding out she was pregnant then had to change back to Methadone. I don't think she felt ready to come off everything and didn't want to end up pregnant,no prescription and using Heroin because of it so decided that going back onmethadone was going to be the right thing for her. She had  baby not to long ago and he's doing fine. Congratulations hope everything goes well.

I agree with everyone. Be honest with your Doc and just take whatever he gives you and take it like he says to. You can do this:) Do it for yourself and your baby thats on the way:)  ((((HUGS))))

First of all, and I am speaking from personal experience, calm down.  They are probably right in not giving you SUb while you are pregnant, although there haven't been any real studies done, it's just better to be safe than sorry.
Secondly, a taper is in your best interest.  Talk with your dr.  If you are not able to take them EXACTLY as the dr prescribes to do the taper, you MUST tell them.
Thirdly, I was prescribed percocet throught my ENTIRE pregnancy.  My nationally accredited peri-natal specialist prescribed them for me.  I never took more than I was prescribed and I was honest from day one.  I did manage to stop about 7 weeks before my daughter was born because I didn't want her to have withdrawals, BUT, if your dr KNOWS you have been taking them and KNOWS you have been prescribed the medication evenif the baby is born adicted and goes through withdrawals, they can make it very VERY easy and comfortable to get the baby OFF the narcotic and treat the withdrawal symptoms, but ONLY IF THEY KNOW.  ANd NO, they will NOT take your baby from you as long as you're honest.
They routinely take blood from mother's while they are carrying but it usually isn't to drug test.
Talk to your dr, do the taper because stopping cold turkey is quite dangerous to you and the baby.  The amount of stress that your body would undergo could be too much for the fetus and you could very easily miscarry.
And one last thing, my daughter was born VERY healthy and NOT addicted and she has con tinued to be a wonderfully bright and healthy little girl.
Good luck to you!!!

hi!!  congrats on your pregnancy!! how exciting!! i was prescribed vicodin too during my pregnancies .. i had my first child by c-section, then 2 back surgeries and 14 yrs later, got pregnant again .. problem being, my back bothered me alot - i think mostly because of the tremendous weight  i had gained ... i only took them as needed which wasn't that often .. maybe 5 a month if that ... then i got pregnant again right aways, my 2 youngest are 15mos apart .. i pretty much took 1-2 a day thru out my whole pregnancy .. all under the care of my obgyn .. i never took more than 2 in one day .. my back suffered big time w/my last pregnancy ... doing everything for my daughter who wz just a baby - man it was not fun ... at least i didn't gain 1/2 the weight i gained w/the others .. anyways .. if you can do a taper plan, i am pretty sure they will give them to you to take as the plan suggests .. if you don't think you can hold onto them w/out taking them, then give them to someone to hold onto .. both my kids were totally fine and still are ... except they are driving me up the wall today to wear their costumes all day!! ... good luck to you!!! good luck w/you pregnancy also ... peace!!

I just thought i'd say as i didn't mention in last post. I already have a son who is two in Jan. I was on 140mls of methadone when i fell pregnant and only managed to get down to 120mls so was still on a large dose when he was born. I was told it was much better to be stable on my medication and that baby could develop normally if i was stbale on medication. When Jacob was born he had to have  morphine 2 days afetr he was born as he was showing some withdrawal symptoms. He was put on to the lowest dose that they use as a starting dose and this did not have to be increased. He was on morphine for approx 7 days at first every 4 hrs then 6,8,12. Jacob did not show any withdrawal signs when tapered off morphine. I was totally ashamed i had put my baby through that but i think that any mother would have those kind of feelings but i did do everything possible whilst pregnant eg not using heroin and being as healthy as possible. I have diabetes as well so that was a worry. dr's were more concerned about complications because of diabetes than methadone. Jacob is a very healthy & happy little boy and other than the what i have mentioned in fist 10days after he born he has had no other problems and couldn#t be happier.

Glad your baby was healthy and thanks for being honest. Many people can not kick their habits and end up with very sick children. Snorting(oxycotin) is in fact causing disformities, but people are not speaking out. Imagine the lifetime pain of having a blind or mentally retarded child, drugs do and can destroy a fetus. God surely was watching over you. Thanks for being honest and glad everything worked out.
