I think the tenuous FDA approval of subutex/suboxone and methadone (for pregnancy) explains the confusion about it's legitimate use for pregnant women. As far as I am aware, both suboxone/subutex carry a Class C classification for use during pregnancy. A Class C rating is described by the FDA as follows....
"Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks"
Hardly a glowing endorsement there nor is it going to help settle the nerves of any expectant mother. Methadone also carries the same Class C rating which I believe is unfounded considering methadone is one of the most myopically studied medications ever
developed, especially compared with the relative obscurity of suboxone/subutex.
I dont believe social services will remove the child provided your daughter is forthcoming with doctors overseeing her pregnancy and she is able to show her narcotic consumption is limited to prescribed medicines only. If she tries to decieve doctors about her Rx'ed methadone she may find social services aggressively seeking to remove the child from her care.
All the best for yourself, your daughter and your unborn grandchild. Kind regards Jeremy (recovered addict) 3 years 6 months drug and alcohol free.
Hi,
Subutex IS FDA approved and has been for many years. I will assume, and it is only an assumption, that they put her on Methadone for two reasons---the cost and the fact that there have not been a lot of studies done on pregnant woman taking Subutex.
I didn't see where you have a question..please ask and we will see if we can help you.
