alcohol and morphine detox

by blithers, Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM
My brother-in-law currently drinks a liter of vodka and 4-5 beers a day, and he has taken morphine every day for over a year. He has decided to quit cold turkey and insists that he can do it without help if everyone would leave him alone for 3 or 4 days. Is this a good idea?

Hi, welcome to the forum.  I'm not a doctor so I couldn't really tell you the medical part of this, but I do know that I've went c/t from pain pills quite a few times and I'm still here.  I'm sure there are some cautions but there are cautions taking them as well.  I think that each person has a way of doing it on their own time and their own ways.  I'm not sure on the alcohol part because I've never been an alcoholic but if he can do it if everyone leaves him alone for 3 or 4 days by all means I would let him do it.  This is just my opion, like I said, I'm not a doctor.  I would definitely keep an eye on him from a distance and make sure he's ok, but if he can do this, it's definitely beneficial for him and everyone else to let him try.  Try and make it a stressless 3 or 4 days for him.  Maybe help him when he needs Immodium AD and something to eat and drink if he can't get out of bed and get it himself.  Good luck to you all.  It's a very giant step to admit what he has and get to the point where he wants to quit.  You all will be in my thoughts and prayers.  I'm here for a while if you have any questions or need someone to talk to.  Tell him that I'm here if he needs someone to talk to as well.  Take care and god bless, Lil.  :)

Those 3 or 4 days are gonna be pretty rough for him. He needs to have lots of fluids available the whole time. If he can make the first week, it aint nuthin but a mind game after that. He will start felling better and better as the days go by.

I also agree about keeping an eye on him. It can be a dangerous just going CT off the morphine. Kicking the booze to is pretty rough in itself. I kicked the morphine and the cigs at the same time. So it can be done.

Cheers him on!!!

I would be careful as alcohol withdrawl can cause seizures...and with the morphine thrown in, I really think he needs to be medically monitored. Please try to convince him. Good luck to all of you.

W/D from that much alcohol can be FATAL - he'd be much safer in a detox facility.
