Why do you feel that you're abusing it?  I had a doctor put me on sleeping pills a while ago and he said that there is no problem taking them nightly - if anything you're addicted to sleep and that's not a bad thing!  If you're taking them more than prescribed, then there may be a problem.

I completely understand the shame about telling the doc.  None of my doctors know how much of my meds I was taking.  Probably never will.  But, if it gets to the point where it is completely out of control, you do need to tell someone and get help.

If u r taking more than prescribed then u may want to get off of them...any sleep med be it benadryl or even melatonin can cause difficulty sleeping if u take it for a long time then stop it...ur body is used to that extra help with getting to sleep.  have u talked to ur doctor about it?

It may mean giving up some sleep until your body and mind adjust to going to sleep on your own.  If you are missing out on time awake to join in on life, then yes I would encourage you to withdraw. I took ambien for the first few nights of my first withdrawal from opiates but I have no idea what to expect with ambien.. Keep posting and someone may relate or we will all support you in your decision to get off ambien.

How much ambien were u taking at night?

If you have taken ambien more than 7-10 days which is what the company recommends you will have trouble sleeping for many nights or longer. It's called re-bound insomnia. You can read my journal for more infomation on Ambien and like drugs. I took the recommened dose for 6 months and it took me 4 months to be able to sleep normal again. Doctors are just now finding out how Ambien effects the brain. Even though commercials say it is non narcotic, it's just like a Benzo to the brain,

you can defintely become addited and abuse ambien, since I myslef had my own problem with ambien. I not knowingly after a year and a half of nightly use had an addiction for ambien, luneseta, any sleep aid I could gt prescribed for me. It is relatively easy to ge tthem prescribed for you, but using them in alrge amounts and every night will defintely present a problem, causing addiction and withdrawal from stopping use. I know I had rebound insomnia for at least a week and the withdrawal can effect everyone differently and some get it worst than others. It really depends on the length of sue and how much you used on a nightly basis. If absolutely neccessary some benzos can help the cravings and withdrawal but you ened to eb careful in that not to switch addictions between drugs. Some benzos found useful is temazepam, diazepam, lorazepam, and clonazepam. defintely be weary tho....

even otc sleep aids state not to take them more than a certain amount of time/nor to take them every night or the body and/or mind can become dependent on them
