ambien

Any comments on the medication ambien. Does anyone else think it is addictive besides me. I have not only had bad w/d symptons due to hydro but I believe this has effected me as well. My nights are terrible, horrible nightmares! I have been taking it for about 7 years (taking ambien for 2 weeks, then switching to ambien CR, going back and forth between the two) This is night two without it. Let me know what you think

I have been on Ambien for about 11yrs now and I think it is extremely addictive. There really isn't any physical w/d except insomnia but there is total  mental w/d. 11 years ago I was prescribed Ambien because I was starting a anti depressant that would cause insomnia, I never took the Ambien because I slept like a baby and could never picture myself ever having trouble sleeping and when I told the Dr. that she convinced me to have to take because once the problem of not sleeping came and it would the Ambien wouldn't work, At the time I was like 24 and totally nieve but I did start taking it. At that point I had never taken anything stronger then Advil but had alot of stress in my life due to family issues ect.... Anyway I continued to take it for about 3-4 months when my next Dr. appt. came I found out that my Dr. was no longer with there so I saw another Dr. who didn't want to prescribe Ambien because its addicting. I trusted him and instead he gave me trazadone, Well the next day I went to work I felt like a zombie after 9hrs of sleep and it took about 6 hrs after I woke up to feel normal. So completely fustrated I decided to try to sleep without taken anything and go back to my normal and natural way of falling asleep. Too my suprize it did not happen, After not be able to asleep for about 4 days I was a mess so I called the dr. and flipped out. So I had to then find another Dr. and from that point on I was hooked to Ambien. I have tried every over the counter and natural medicine for sleep. I have also tried different meditations and sleep excercises. Then tried different prescibed sleep  meds and unfortunatly nothing works because I feel I started with Ambien the strongest one out there and didn't have a sleep disorder at the time but trusted my doctors advice. Now I feel my body has lost its inability to fall and stay asleep naturally. Also your tolerance goes up and you need to take way more then perscribed and it only gives me 4 hours sleep if lucky. I HATE THIS. SO MY ADVICE IS NEVER START IT OR IF YOU HAVE JUST STARTED IT STOP NOW BEFORE YOU END UP LIKE ME

The Ambien is a risky one.  I had the same symptoms as you and there are many horror stories of people doing things they dont even remember doing.  For me the mental torture of them followed by the physical pain they caused my body the next day made me stop right away.  You can become dependent on them as your body gets used to using the drug for sleep. Personally..... I would stray away from putting other strong drugs into your system right now.  The creepy crawlies are the worst at bedtime.  I just finished mine FINALLY last night. (Day 18). During the night either keep taking hot showers or really hot baths with epsom salt.  It will completely eliminate that feeling, but it might come back again in an hour so you need to keep repeating.  I lived in the shower every night for a couple of weeks so you can make it.  If you can take some time off work then that will help as you can go walking, exercise etc.  One thing that really helps is exercise.  Especially getting really sweaty.  If you can follow that with a 15 minute sauna, or hot tub even better.  Lots and lots of sun too!  It eases the pain and warms the muscles.  Lots of Gatorade and Amino Acid Protein shakes for the aches and low energy.  I tried EVERYTHING on the Thomas Recipe also but the ones I listed worked best for me.  Bendadryl along with Calcium Magnesium helps as does Melatonin from GNC.  One night I did try 3 of the 5mg Valium and that helped a little bit but again...just another pill.  It's the anxiety that makes it hard to sleep?  I lived in the shower.  Some nights 6-7 of them.  I stayed away from the NyQuil and sleep aid medications (including Ambien) as the morning after was that much more painful.   You can do this!  Give yourself a pat on the back and try to get off them if you can.

If you do not drink alcohol and take other drugs I highly recommend Ambien. The only people that I have known to have had problems did one of these. Taken responsibly they have worked for me. I never take 3 or 5 days in a row either, just as needed. I have used them for about 7 years. I only take when I have something important to do the following day and need a good nights sleep, like work, etc. You only need 5mg, if you get 10 mg break the pill in half. When taken they usually work in 30 minutes, be ready to go to bed. I also can wake up at night after taking them to go to bathroom, etc. but I also am able to fall right back to sleep. Never take them if you can not get 7 or  8 hours of sleep, then you are not drossy the next day.

I have taken Ambien responsible for about 7 years. My husband had Sleep Abnea and snored so that I could not sleep. he finaaly had the surgery, but iam still a very light sleeper. I take Ambien only as needed, night before working, etc. I do seminars and conferences, so as to be fresh for those Itake the night before. I always make sure I can get 7 to 8 hours sleep and never take with any other drug or alcohol. I have never had a bad experience with Ambien and have taken The plain and the CR. All work well for me. I have had Arthritis in my spine the last few weeks and have taken Hydroclone which works well but I feel I need to get off. I have ha dthe prescription filled twice with 20 pills. I started with 2 and then went down to 1 every 6 hours or less or as needed. I will not mix any drugs. My doctor called in a muscle relaxer which I took only one night becaue I had bad dreams, visions and I don't want to experience that sgain. He wants me to try a milder one supposingly called Flexeril. I also use Bio Freeze which is a topical that I call the miracle gel, it coems in spray and cream also, which I highly recommend to anyone with joint pain or Arthritis.

Are you sure your back issues aren't because of Ambien?  It caused my lower back to hurt and I would get sciatica as well.
