If I may ask, how did you get diagnosed for TMJ? What types of tests do they do for it or is it just a matter of you explaining your symptoms and then they diagnose it? I am thinking I will ask my Dr. about it. I do notice that whne I wake up, I am clenching my jaws. I don't know why or if it has anything to do with TMJ but it's worth a look. Thanks.

Aha, I see. I guess I won't be trying it then :(

I do use Imitrex and it works very well, so I'm sure they are migraines. However, in the last few years they are coming almost daily so I am trying to find something that will lessen them. The Topa seemed to help in the beginning but now not so much. I do know I was over using OTC meds and now I am 5 days completely free of them because I'm sure some of the problem was rebound or transformed migraines due to that. I'm with you, Avisg, on the narcotics....I can't believe reading on here how many doctors are prescribing them for migraine (?). Mine never would. Well, Fiorinal back in the day but not very many and when I still got them, she said "no more". I really just feel like it shouldn't be humanly possible to get a migraine every day. I am considering Botox next...I've run out of things to try. Of course, migraine is considered a pre-exsisting condition so insurance won't cover. Anything I do I have to pay for and it aint cheap. The Imitrex alone is $224.00 for nine pills!

i thought elavil and amityp. were the same, but i'm not certain. the dr. told me not to take pain meds for headaches. the headaches go away for a few hours but come back wanting another lortab or whatever. he prescibed elavil/amityp. for me to take at night to keep the headaches away.

HR , first thing I would want to know for the doctor is what kind of headaches do you have ..If topamax, imitrex and drugs like elavil are not helping then you probably are not having migraines and its a different type of headache .I have been told by more then one nero doctor if narcotics are making your headaches go away then you don't have migraines .Narcotics do not on migraines . I finally got relief with topamax .After I had had a hyster back in 2005. I stopped getting migraines all together .Then last summer. I started getting what I assumed were migraines again the doctors tried the migraine meds and they did nothing turned out my headaches were coming from TMJ they were just as bad as what I had before but different .Pain meds got rid of them. It is important to have a good doctor that can get  diagnose your  headaches properly or you send months trying all sorts of meds that do help at ALL.

Does anyone know if it makes you really sleepy? My doctor once put me on Elavil for my headaches but it didn't help and I did not like the feeling of being sooo sleepy in the mornings. Is this drug similar to Elavil? I don't really understand how an antidepressant can help with pain, though. At this point, though, I'll try anything. Topamax (prevention med for migraine, among other things) has failed, Elavil has failed. I will ask my Dr. about this drug.

That's an old antidepressant that is sometimes used in very low doses for the relief of neuropathy.

So maybe your Doc thinks your headaches are being caused by neuropathy?

Or maybe he is using a higher dose and thinks your headaches stem from depression?

I don't know if that helps, but I was put on that exact drug for back pain with sciatica and it made the sciatica go away but had serious adverse side effects for me.

Can you phone your Dco and ask what the reason is that you were put on it?

Love and healing,

So sorry about your dialy headaches Sweetheart

Emily
