yes it can be an addiction and a very serious one.......you'll figure that out when you start losing more than a few grand and it will happen......then when you do.......you want to chase it to get it back and then another vicious cycle..........

Is your question can gambling be a destructive addiction?
people loose everything they have gambling, they spend there rent money, there kids grocery money because in there minds they can't keep loosing and the next bet is a lock a sure thing and then everything will be rosey........
People get divorced from gambling they loose there children because their gambling becomes an obsession in their lives and nothing else matters............

you say you love to play poker every other weekend and not spending very much money but winning thousands and thousands of dollars at a time it sounds like your doing great and have found a gold mine of new income...........

josh , yes I am a bit lost on the I'm not spending much but making a few grand , What kind of poker are you playing ?Cross addiction happens alot it is something I struggle with alot IE smoking, sex, food or lack there of ,there is my short list  ....So stating you need to be very careful would be an understatement.

I was just talking about this in another post. I have picked up several othere addictions. I do gambel, but not to the extent where I feel worried that it will bring me down. For me, it's whatever I can play out my addiction at the moment. It may be stopping at the store on the way home to binge eat in the car, or deciding that I need more clothes (even though we just went shopping and my closet is full) but I'll go shopping for HOURS. THese are all things I will do alone.

Just be careful, gambeling is one thing, but losing all your money doing it, is hitting rock bottom.

hey there .. peanut m&m's are my new addiction .. ugh! .. whats w/that? anyways, about gambling, don't do it .. i mean maybe once in a while but if you've got an addictive personality, just walk away from it ... my dad is a big gambler.  They lost a house over this when we were younger .. they fought, they seperated numerouse times, almost got divorced several times .. he's also a drinker too .. my dad always worked, never drank at home ... they seemed to have endless amounts of money ... but they really didn't .. he gambled it all away .. got new credit cards and used them up - still don't know why my mom puts up w/this .. she's a huge enabler though .. then of course, detroit had to build new casinos downtown .. its funny cuz it seems like if she goes w/him it doesn't seem to matter if he gambles .. maybe she keeps him in check .. i don't know .. my mom will only spend $20, thats it, no more.   I've heard and whether this is true or not, i don't know, that gambling addiction is very similiar to cocaine addction .. the highs of winning and then coming down, spend some more, win some more, come down and do it all over again until your money is gone ... i don't know, maybe i'm just ramblin ... i don't gamble .. i went one time and did the slot machines and spent 40.00, came home w/200 ... but i made my husband stop.  why lose that when we really needed the 200 and not to mention the 40 ... anyways .. welp, i hope you will be smart about it and slow down or quit now before it does really get a hold of you  ... my dad has worked hard to get his credit all back in check, have a new house, new cars and are able to go on nice vacations and so forth but he's 62 now and just think of what he could of had had he not gambled all of it away ... ya know?  ... peace!!! have a good nite!!!!

Have I had other addictions? I have to laugh. Hun, I could get addicted to rubber bands if I could get my hands on enough of them. I have to watch everything I do.

When I first got out of rehab, many moons ago, I was going to work and meetings..that is all I did. I went to the movies one Saturday and I was hooked. I started going to those theaters with 6 or 7 movies showing. I would leave one and go to another. It got ridiculous, and expensive. Then there was the toothbrush addiction. Hubby had 1, I had 6, and I am missing teeth!

Gambling is a non-no if you ask me. I had several friends switch from dugs to gambling. It is an easy transition.

You asked if it can be done in moderation? Did you use drugs in moderation? Only you know that answer.....

you are so funny. I agree with you and I could get addicted to ANYTHING if I let myself. Not to long ago, I couldn't pass a Coldstone Creamery with out stopping and (not just getting a little) getting a QUART (our's size, if anyone is familiar with coldstone) of a special concoction just for me! (I love peanut butter).
I just recently stopped that.

Now I'm not eating at all, and taking laxatives.

It's usually all or nothing with me.

I know what you're talking about.  I play a lot of poker and am always thinking about it and how easy it could be to become addicted.  Fortunately I only enjoy playing for pennies and haven't gotten the gambling bug, but I know it's looming.

I wish I could become addicted to gardening or running or something like that!!

YEAH, I've tried to get addicted to exercising,  becuase when I would run , I would get this high feeling half the way through and also when I was done. But it only lasted about 20 min. (I guess that's why they call it a "runner's high"),

Anyway, it would just leave me wanted something stronger.
