I have anxiety/panic disorder w/agoraphobia. I started out on lorazepam, then xanax, now am on Clonazepam..which as you can see are all in the same family. The clonazepam is a longer acting..where as the other 2 are short acting.
Hope this was of some help.
There are a lot of ppl here much more versed in this subject than me. But actually Valium has a longer 1/2 life..etc.
Xanax is horrible.. in my humble opinion don't start if you don't have to start
Thnx gip
I've been on and off benzos and currently on 2mg of xanax. When I say on and off, I managed to get off xanax thru the use of Librium. A month later after total cessation, the withdrawals were so extreme and if you look around long enough in this forum, I'm sure someone you'll find great detail about xanax withdrawal Gypsie is right. It is the KING of benzos and it is a brutal to get off even small amounts, and I say this from experience and people I know, MOST people. I have tried weening, and just about everything else. I'm 50 and been on them for years. Ativan, valium, xanax. The longer you are on them, the harder to quit. Your body will tell you"heh" it's time for your xanax, and you better have it. I had a partial complex seizure, acute dystonia about 2 yeas ago when I was completely ignorant of xanax's profile, how it replaces the GABA in the brain. Even Ativan can be weened off fairly easy and it is the next in line as far as a short half life. I once ran out and weened to ativan or crossed over and that was brutal. My doc gives me 3mg, but I take only 2. He wanted me to go on XR 2mg twice daily.-thank God I did not. My new doc wants me to use Librium again only for a longer period to ween off the xanax. I'm very concerned about the attempt, but I want off more than you can fathom in your mind. If you have not been on Xanax too long, (a few months) and before your BODY gets used to it, stay with the valium. It's great for anxiety, but you do not need a high dose. For most, it's more makes you tired where xanax takes the edge off. The problem is that xanax is like a double edge sword, it will return the edge in a few hours. Like the gift that keeps on giving. It gives you relief, then tells you, "heh, you need some relief again in few hours. It is very physically additive-like heroin, but in a differnt class and a entirely different effect.
