bike accident

hi Guys, this is Jim back. some of you know my history with my ex wife and her addiction and finally getting divorced over it. I have never taken pills, but saturday while on my harley i hit a deer and put the bike down hard in the ditch. i suffered a shattered collar bone, dislocated shoulder, concussion, and a badly bruised lung. they sent me home with 20 05/500 vicadin which i promply used up, no buzz but the pain was horrid. today my doc gave me  05/350 vicodin script for 40 with 2 refills, wow do they help with the pain. i dont want to get addicted so when should i stop. but for the pain and sleeping they are a godsend. both my shoulders are affected and i cant even cough............let me know i dont want to be back here in 2 weeks asking how to get off, Jim

OUCH ! ! !

Have you ever taken pain pills in the past for legitimate reasons?  I mean when you were really in pain.  I am sure you probably have at some point in your life and you didn't get addicted then, did you?

In a couple of days, I would start alternating the pills with motrin 800mg. and see if you are able to control the pain with that.  If it works, then start cutting back on the pain pills until you are able to control the pain with just the motrin.

Get lots of rest and don't over do it.  Don't add more stress to already hurting body parts, lol.  I think you will be surprised that you will do ok with the pills.

Good luck to you and I hope you feel better soon.

Peace,
Holly

I would say you are okay as long as you take the pills only when you need them, there will come a point that your pain will be controlled on over-the-counter stuff, I would think within say 7 days, a good guess.  Just don't ever take them unless you truly need them.  It would not work for someone like me who is already addicted, but for a person like you who is on guard, you should be fine.

Sorry about your accident.  I have a brother-in-law who has been in a wheelchair for the last 20 years due to running into a utility pole while on his motorcycle.  They are so dangerous, but guess you already know that and do not need a lecture!

Love, Cindy

I'm totally new here but I feel your pain.  I was in a motorcycle accident 20 years ago broke all my ribs, collapsed a lung and burned to top of my foot off.  Funny thing was when I left the IC the drs gave me nothing but OTC stuff.  It worked.  Now 20 years later with chronic pain I started with vicodin and went up to Norco.  be careful it is so easy to become addicted to the pills.  I would agree with Cindy on the 7 days then try just the OTC stuff make sure it's the pain making you take the pills and not the feeling good.  Best of luck for a quick recovery.

Hi,

After surgery to remove the whole bone from my upper arm I was on vicodin. I took them every 4 hours at first, but since there was real pain for them to work on, I never felt buzzed. Just relief. I had no problem quitting them. You're in some serious pain right now. Maybe you could talk to your Dr. about your fear of becoming addicted.

Please keep posting.....Hugs.....LS
