My husband was just given a script for this by our family doctor actually :). Our family doctor was also the supervisor of the physicians at a Houston drug rehab facility. From my own understanding and research it's one of the safest w/d aides out there. I also agree, you should be given the lowest effective dose possible...my husband takes .1 mg 2x a day for now. Obviously that may not be what is best for you and your situation but thought I'd throw it out there anyway lol. Oh and we have three kids too lol, two in school one at home! I can relate to your situation :).

I was in your husbands shoes and well I still am lol. This site and the people here have been amazing to say the least. I've made new friends, I've learned a ton and I have support. Invite your hubby here, everyone is super nice here! :) You don't have to be an addict, you just have to want to learn :). *hugs for you and your hubby*

Surprisingly, clonodine helps wd quite a bit.  It reduces anxiety, helps with sleep and even rls in some people.  It is NOT for anyone with health problems unless you are in patient and can be monitored.  If prescribed, you should be given the lowest dose they sell.  But do it right -- see your doc and get directions.

Thanks alot! I have a pretty good relationship w/ my family doc, although she's actually a nurse practicioner. However, she does not know about me being on subs since I rarely see a doc for myself and I was getting the subs from my sub doc who basically dropped me like a hot potatoe when I told her my insurance was stopping. My sub doc told me I needed to take a week off of work b/c I was gonna be pretty sick and try to get as much excercise as possible....and that was it! Thanks to everyone who answered!! I really appreciate it! I know wd is not avoidable altogether, but w/ 3 kids (all 5 or under) I need lots of help getting through this. I am married, but my hubs has never been addicted to anything and he's more in a position of not knowing what to do to help as opposed to not wanting to help.

Yes, it was used in my accelerated detox.  My "support person" had very strict rules as to when she could give me one.  The main rule was that she had to check my blood pressure.  If it was below a certain point, then she could not give me the medicine.

My detox was performed by an addiction specialist.   Clonodine helped me tremendously!  I was coming off a very large daily dosage of straight oxycodone.

Like others said.  Get it from a doctor and be truthful for what you want to use it for.  Get a blood pressure monitoring kit to measure the blood pressure before taking it.  Also, do you have a support person?  As someone else said, the medicine really made me sleepy which was actually a good thing.  It would have been very bad if I would have taken it when my blood pressure was already low.  A person could go to sleep and their heart would stop.  This is the danger you are playing with.

Get it right.  Get a doctor to prescribe with rules.  Get a blood pressure monitoring kit.  Get a support person.   This is all needed for the clonodine.

Good luck!

Thank u! I have been thru wd before but from percs and oxys. This time its subs and I've been in them for 4 and a half yrs. I'm trying to prepare myself for what's to come. I've got myself down to 1 mg and plan to go lower but I've heard horror stories when it comes to getting off subs. The worse part of wd for me is the anxiety and chills. My heart races and I get very nervous feeling. I've heard some say clonidine helps when going through wd.

From your post it is hard to tell but it sounds like you are very concerned (frightened?) of withdrawal. What are your concerns?. Have you been through WD before? What are you withdrawal from? How much? How long? If you let us know people will be able to give you some more help.

Keep posting!
You have come to the right place for help. These are good people and can provide so much care and support.

Take time to read through the other postings and discussions. I think they will answer a lot of your questions. Even questions you didn't know you had.

Yes.  what are you withdrawing from?  It doesn't help with everything I don't believe, but it relieves high bloodpressure which is a part of withdrawls.

I walked into the ER one night a couple years ago and said "I need help..I'm addicted to vicodin...I don't want narcotics..I want help" they prescribed it to me...within 2 hours of taking the first pill I had calmed down, could carry on a conversation (well sort of)...it
does have it's side affects, one of which it CAN make you very drowsy...I've fallen asleep while working several times (I work at home) and your mouth very dry...

Do not buy off the street...ask your doctor/er for it, and FOLLOW THEIR DIRECTIONS..misuse/abuse can lead to some serious problems such as too low BP and have you passing out getting out of a chair...and if you do get it, buy a bag of hard candies which will help with the dry mouth.

But I found it helped a lot with the symptoms...make sure your doctor gives you instructions on how to ease off of it...you should only have to be on it about 2 weeks at most...I was done in about that time.

Good luck

Jim
