coming off a 10,-10mg vicodin a day "schedule"

my doctor is sending me to a pain mgmt dr. & an arthritis dr. due to me having gouty arthritis. i have had 3 surgeries in the past 4 yrs due to fractures in my feet from gout attacks. i have been on either vicodin or rarely percocet for 4 years @ 10-10mgs a day. im prescribed 4 a day, so am always running out. like NOW i just took my last 10mg until 4 days from now when i get my script. the dr. knows they are no longer working thats why hes refering me to pain mgmt. the strongest ive ever taken is percocet. what can i expect from pain mgmt? thanks to anyone who can help. scared of withdraw i know i can expect until script is filled. chris

withdrawl hitting me hard now. anyone w/ any helpful ideas. i could really use some. my husband of 17 yrs is no help as he sees addiction as a major weakness and doesnt understand why i cant just get over it.

I hear you Chris... i remember the angst i felt when I was running low. It literally drove me nuts. Since you can't get them to Thursday, you will be just at the hardest point, and weakest. Go and look up the Thomas recipe and those items will help. Sleep will be toughest which will compound anxiety. It'sthe crossroad... just continue to search this forum and get as much information as you can. Write down how you are feeling and reach out to all of us, we have been there!

just got off the phone w/ my primarys nurse. they cant give me any pain meds until dr gets back on thursday. took my last vic yesterday & am having slight withdraw already. i know this will only get worse. my point is if i get my script on thurs. i will have went thru this for nothing! chris

I really really am happy that you are here! Oxy is just plain scary and you know that already. I've never heard a doctor tell of the horror that can happen with this drug. The oxy path is just one no one should go down, in my opinion. If you are going through your vicoden script that quickly your tolerance will just build. Mine did. I've opted for acupuncture, and it worked. Try other options than opiates, you may be surprised!

my primary wont be in until thursday & the nurse said she didnt know if another dr. in that practice would prescribe me pain meds until she gets back. The reason I asked about pain mgmt is because my dr said pain mgmt dr would probably prescribe stronger meds & ive read all the horror stories about oxycontin or morphine but then the pain hits and @ the time i think who cares what it is if it will make the pain stop!

Are you saying you are out of pills? If so your primary doctor should give you enough until you talk to the pain management doc. Try not to get into the cycle of taking pain meds as it will become a rollercoaster ride,
