If effexor is no longer helping the symptoms tell the doc you need to get off and go to another drug.
I hope another person posts here about effexor xr addiction or withdrawal. I know my friend had withdrawal in the form of anger and panic. So  she gave up trying the other drug he gave her and went back to effexor at a higher dose. I think 150mg. If you don't trust what your doc says get a second opinion.
I was on effexor for a short time but it didn't deal with my problem. I had a headache for withdrawal for a few days . I only used it 2 months.

Effexor truely saved my life. I was really depressed like really depressed. I started on the standard 37.5 dosage and at one point was up too as high as 240 or 250mgs....i cant remember which. The main thing with Effexor is finding the right dosage. thats not always easy but u have to keep going to the doc if ur still getting symptoms. My personal opinion unless ur having bad side effects continue with effexor but keep raising the dosage if not enough. Another good thing about effexor is that its one of the few antidepressants that do not cause weight gain. when u feel like ur starting to get better keep on that dose for a while then from there on lower it gradually. There were a few times i thought i could handle a lower dosage but ended up having to get it increased again. Eventually i got it lowered right back down to 37.5 again and now today....NOTHING!!!!!      well.........only now i'm addicted to oxycontin....lol. but the depression has completly gone. i'm also on day one of detox! haha. just trying to keep my sense of humor through it all. I had a few mood swings the first week i came off the effexor but after that i was ok.

I hope this helped u. I found effexor extremly helpful but thats just me.

best of luck to you. :)

p.s. i was on effexor for 2 years.

I am seriously considering making an appt with a specialist who actually knows something about anti-depressents...any doc will throw u an RX but I would like someone who knows a bit more about the drugs than most of my docs do..i take lexapro and have been since a few weeks before I quit lortabs
