New Dr.?
Norco = vicodin. Both are opiates. I believe that percocet is even stronger.

no, its the same dr.....i dont get this at all......he knows im trying to taper.

I was suggesting a new Dr.
Is the dose he prescribed smaller than the Norco?
Call his nurse and have them explain what it is he was intending to do.
What sort of dose are you on? (qty/day & length of Rx)
How long have you been using?
If he is helping you taper. There should be a plan! so mnay for x# days, then change to a little bit fewer for so many days.
You could just quit, too. It's hard for the first week, then it starts to get better.

I really want a new dr but this is workers comp andits really hard to get a new dr....thats what my lawyer says anyway.
I have no idea how to really read the doses.The Norco says 10/325.The Percocet says 7.5/500.
I have been on the meds for 9 months now for this injury that turned into somthing way worse....I had 9 broken bones in my foot and ankle and it devloped into complex regional pain syndrom (syndrome).I( am in pain everyday. I am not trying to quit all the way because my doc is totally aginst it.I am trying to get down to a safe level.I started taking almost double what I was prescribed right from the start of this injury.So now I am down to 12 a day.I am prescribed 8 a day.I taper by using 1/2 pill less every 4 days.This is working pretty well for me.I want to get down to 5 or 6 a day if at all possible.

Norco = hydrocodone
Percocet = Oxycodone

The percocet is stronger.

Good luck. The hardest part of tapering is the will power to regulate the doses. Otherwise it is a good way to go. I hope you will be able to eventually be off of these for good.
I still don't understand prescribing something stronger!

david0263 is correct.  The percocet is stronger.  It is also regulated more and are not allowed refills with it as you are with the Norco.  Most doctors will try to get you to go from percocet to Norco and then down.  The fact that your Norco was 10/325 and the Percocet is 7.5/500 probably means they are about equal except the percocet has an extra 175 mg of tylenol.  This extra tylenol is not good for you since you are taking over 5000 mg of tylenol.  I believe the safe dosage of tylenol is not more than 4000 mg/day (otherwise it can harm your liver and you only have one).

Also....  Percocet is a Schedule II narcotic where the hydro is a schedule III

Is your lawyer aware of your problem? They should be! If this is a case, they need to be aware of all things going on with you. Who knows, it could work in your favor.

by what2donow, Dec 12, 2007 01:14PM
Actually the lawyer is aware of the addiction and it will work in my favor.I hope that they pay for rehab at some point.....

It also depends on whether or not the Dr. changed the frequency of your dosage.  7.5mg Percs are about as equivelant as 10mg Hydro's.  Personally, from an addicts point of view, I'd take the Hydro's over the Perc's.

So..... If you were taking (1) 10mg Hydro every let's say... 4 hours (6 a day) and he changed your prescription to (1) 7.5mg Percocet every 6 hours (4 a day) then he did actually lower your dosage even though he changed the type of medication.  It would have went from 60mg's a day to 30mg's a day.

Considering the potency of the two drugs he would have probably lowered your dosage by 25% - 30% a day.  Now if you're an addict like me then it doesn't matter what it says on the bottle.  I take them whenever I feel like it.  :)  Not saying that we are in the same boat.  I just rarely follow the directions.

Just a reminder to let your lawyer know of the change in meds. It is good to document everything. Don't trust your memory to remember later.
How are you doing today, anyway?
