here ya go-
I agree that in your case you should definitely try your hardest to detox yourself off of the oxycontin because starting medicated treatment with suboxone or methadone opens up a whole new ball game and youll have to get off those as well. I got addicted to oxies, switched to heroin to save money, then got help, went to treatment was on 32mgs of suboxone for 9 mths. and then I was in an accident and I was taken off suboxone. I then started methadone treatment and I can tell you taht is your absolute last case scenario. They are liquid handcuffs, the wds from both meds last way longer and are intense and way more severe. I tell everyone to try everything they can before going on methadone, now if you try cold turkey or detox over and over then I would think about in patient treatment with suboxone, but only after truly trying and wanting to get off of opiates for good, cuz thats the only way youll ever get truly off.
Alright what you want to do if you have any oxycodone left is try to cut down your in take over a few weeks, you say your at 160mgs a day, go down by an amount you are comfortable with. And the worst thing you can do is rush it. I know you want to just go cold turkey, but honestly doing at that dose is going to be so bad that most cannot stop from relapsing. So getting yourself down to any lower dose is better than where your at. You could do 5 or 10 mgs a day or every two days. But give yourself a few weeks to taper down to a lower dose somewhere below 100mgs which isnt to bad, you wont be sick if you taper at a normal pace.
Now that youve tapered down your dose, and if that is working for you then I would go down to the lowest dose that you can because the lower the dose the less severe the wds are going to be.
I dont prefer anyone to just go completely cold turkey where nothing at all is taken, I think an in-home detox where most of the meds are over the counter. Your best bet if you want to get off for good is to go to your doctor or a new doctor, whatever your comfortable, let them know about your situation, they will then prescribe you clonidine which is the biggest wd aid out there, it helps tremendously with the hot/cold flashes, the goosebumps, high/low blood pressure, insomnia, and restlessness. Then the doctor will most likely prescribe you a short term prescription for a benzo, most likely lorazepam, diazepam, or clonazepam. Benzos are huge help for the terrible anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, the muscle aches, twitches, spasms, and pain. The only other script he/she may give you is ambien (Zolpidem) to take to go to sleep, for the insomnia, but most likely if you dont have a history of benzo addiction/abuse then the benzo that is given will do just fine in that department, plus with the clonidine it makes you very drowsy as well.
Then go to a Walgreens or a store like that and buy some immodium, for the bowel problems, some maalox, for the nausea and stomach cramping.
This is exactly what I used when I originally detoxed before suboxone and it left me feeling barely any WDs and was comfortable enough to work, eat, act normal around the family.
If you have an herbal meds store near you or a Whole Foods Store they offer some good medications that truly do help with WDs. Kava Kava extracts and Kratom are what you are looking for. They both work on the opiate receptors and help ease the symptoms of wds, I didnt believe it until I tried it myself. Those two truly do help a ton.
Make sure you drink alot of fluids and eat as well as you can, that is very crucial.
There are other herbal remedies, amino acids, and preparations that can aid in stabilizing your mood, anxiety, and stress, but alot of that is placebo, so that really depends on the individual.
Honestly if you taper down some and have clonidine and the OTC medications then you will really not have to bad of a week, you will feel a little uncomfortable for 5 days, lessening each day, but no where near just stopping completely at 160mgs and not doing anything.
Now if you are in the other scenario where you dont have the option of being able to taper down with the oxies, like youre all out, cant get them, whatever the reason, but if at this moment or after today you have no more oxies, then you will still be fine and be able to follow the detox I laid out. When I did this detox the dose I was taking with oxycontins was snorting over 4 80's just to feel better and get a little buzz. So I was in no way tapered down, so it is possible to detox at the dose you are taking. It wouldnt really be that bad or much worse, it is just overall easier and comfortable having your body used to a low dose of oxycodone instead of 160 or higher. Honestly if you tapered down all the way you wont have any wds at all, but I understand that most ppl when they want to really get off they want to do it now, cuz they are afraid they will change their minds. From my experiences and from many many others, taper down as low as you can (comfortably) and then see a doctor or your doctor, let them know what is going on, and how you wont off, and they will prescribe the medications I spoke of above and then buy the few OTC medications and you will truly not feel to much of anything, the battle will be more mental more than physical if you are detoxing correctly.
If you have any questions about anything else or about anything I said or want me to explain more, just let me know I always check my profile. I really hope you are able to get off and stay off the oxys cuz all it's going to do is completely destroy the family you have and only get worse and worse. Its a never ending cycle until YOU in your heart say no more and stop it. Best wishes-Christos
i don't know the exact regimen you should be on. i quit cold turkey and have been clean for 11 days. it's hard and getting mentally harder which is weird.
but i think honesty is the best policy. if you have a great family, lying and keeping things from them is the best way to lose them. i know it's embarrassing and really hard but i would come clean to your wife before you do anything. that alone will make you feel better and she needs to know what you are going through.
it's an illness. .... i can't for the life of me figure out why any dr. would prescribe these medications... i have seen a lot in my day and pill addiction is the worst and it's legal and prescribed.
in my personal opinion changing out one pill for another is not the answer.
our minds are our strongest tool, we should be able to use them to overcome anything right?
i wish you the best of luck. and know what you're going through.
