i wish you the best in finding out what you want to know, but i just wanted to throw my 2 cents in about signs....honestly, sometimes, you will have NO signs....i've keep my heroin addiction a complete secret from those closest to me for a year and a half now...if someone is determined enough, they can keep it a secret from you. usually they will slip up one way or another and show you some blatant sign that they are using and other times you may not have a clue at all. like others have said above, definitely the nodding in and out, itchiness, definitely the tiny pupils is a huge sign, track marks if they are shooting, odd sleep schedule might be seen, going out to run errands at random times---this could be when he is going to get good. if i think of anything else i will come back to comment! good luck...unfortunately, it does sound like he might be using again, maybe not as bad as before, but it doesnt take long to get back to that point. i went from weekend use to daily use in no time...best of luck to you.

if he is using and tolerant of opiates hes likely not to be itching or dozing off anymore.  I noticed those went away as i abused more and more painkillers. The only real sign is lack of money, tiny pupils even in the dark, and leaving at strange hours or hiding when his cell phone rings! ;)  Trust me as a recovering addict i did all these things, including when i wasnt tolerant of opiates nodding off and being very happy and not being able to sit still!  Always getting up and down and trying to do stuff around the house i normally wouldnt!

well defensive is a verfy good sign, if he was not using he would have nothing to be defensive about. but if he is using i would not go after him like an attack dog. he will only stop using when he is ready not when ur ready for him to stop using thats not how it works. this is the worst part, is sittting back and watching them untill they come to u for help.  ur going to feel hopless and not know what to do. there is something called alanon, it is for parents who have kids or someone they love that are going threw the addiction. give it a shot they will really help u. here is a website for it http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/  use it and hopefully it will help u. they are meetings of parent that are going threw the same thing u are. good luck and god bless.

sounds like he may be using again, does he have certain marks on his arms like track marks?

yes,he has used before and now he is going through alot of money.I dont see him itch  but he does at sometimes fall asleep sitting and says that he is tired. I just wish I could really tell.he is defencive about it.

some signs is nodding off (like going in and out of sleep while sitting down or doing stuff) also itching all over the body mostly nose, paleness, mood swings, bags under eyes, and others but those are the main. Are u a concerned parent or friend?
