It is not theoretically possible to overdose on Melatonin as it is naturally occurring in the body. Melatonin is released in the body when your "biological clock" calls for sleep time. There is a point at which there will be no therapeutic benefit, and you will experience significant increase in grogginess or physically feel sick. If you introduce melatonin into your body at an extremely regular basis, your body will back off on its natural production, but should re-establish after a few days. None of this is FDA tested, so basically clinical trials show the effects of this medication.
If you need more than 5mg of melatonin to sleep, it is time that you look into alternative methods to help with the sleep. Exercising a couple of hours before settling down can help as the body will release endorphins, which will help a lot of people get rid of achey-can't sleep insomnia feeling.
Hope this helps
