how to quit w/ blood pressure problems

how to quit w/ blood pressure problems

my husband has been taking oxy's for severe shoulder pain and wearing a fentanyl patch. he wants to quit taking both and tried to for the first time last week. that ended w/ him in the e.r. with withdrawls. he's been on 5 different meds. for high blood pressure, one of those are clonidine patch and clonidine pill. the withdrawls caused his blood pressure to go through the roof...190/112. now he's back on oxy's and the fentanyl patch. he wants to quit, but how can we keep his blood pressure under control?

I have very high blood pressure and I was able to withdraw many times and it not kill me.  I of course did take my blood pressure meds.  When I am in withdrawals I will come up with any excuse to start taking the painkillers again.  I am not saying the highblood pressure is not real, it is, but staying on OXY and fentanyl because your blood pressure is going to high when you quit is not realistic, it must be treated by other means, not pain killers.   Many of us have chronic pain conditions and high blood pressure. Mine goes sky high when I get kidney stones (once per month) but it does not harm me as the pain killers do.  Good luck to you and him

I have higher BP, also. Clonidine is actually prescribed for withdrawals. I think your husband would benefit from an inpatient detox. Is this an option at all??

thanks for the responses. the thing that really surprised me was that the e.r. doc and his regular doc both told him not to quit taking them. he was very honest and told them he was addicted but wanted to quit and their solution was to write him another script for the pain meds. his regular doc told him they would discuss it in a few weeks after another shoulder surgery he's scheduled to have. i am now in charge of his meds so atleast he can't take more than he should (i hope). i don't know much about inpatient detox. is this very expensive? we have insurance, but he hasn't worked in monthes. do you normally have to pay up front, or how does this work?
thanks again...i've found this site to be very informative and good luck to all of you that are dealing with this.
