i swapped addictions today

by KeepTheHope, Jan 31, 2008 11:07PM
Today I was stupid and decided not to take ANY norco. but I did take percocet. So I took a percocet mid morning, and didnt need anything for the rest of the day. And then 24 hours went by and I hadnt had a norco...I still feel fine. But I know its cuzz that percocet is worse then everything! So that was dumb. I kinda liked feeling ok for the entire day without needing anything, that was nice. but I knwo it was wrong of me to do that. Still, tapered from norco big time! but had a big time crutch. owell. I gotta do what I gotta do and just quit everything one of these days!! It could so easily just turn in to a percocet addiction. Tell you the truth, I didnt even feel like I wanted norco any more. So it was kinda a good day, very low consumption of pills (1), my lowest yet. and the past 24hours without any norco. but soon I'm gonna have to take something cuzz the w/d is coming.

Or not. You could choose today as your day 1 on cold turkey.

Percocet is stronger than Norco. And way more addictive.

If you could get by with only one pill, now would probably be a good time to just get off all of it.  Your withdrawals might not be so awful.  Do it , get it done. Then start to deal with the aftercare you will need to get through cravings etc..   Just my thoughts..  Have a great day.   Mary

Well, I guess we don't think a whole lot when were on drugs, cause I thought the same thing your thinking, & actually posted it here a few weeks ago. DUMB IDEA! I only took percocet for 4 days (being addicted to hydro) thinking wow this is great. I have had no hydro's in 4 days, this is gonna be a breeze. Day 5, 1st thing in the a.m I decided that I wasn't gonna take anything & see what happens. Within, literally 15 mins. of waking up I was like an icecube & shaking. I NEVER felt like that while taking the hydro. So believe me, it's not gonna work. GOOD LUCK!!

When you are addicted to opiates, you are CROSS-TOLERANT.  That means that one opiate can be easily switched or substituted for another.  If you are addicted to Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Norco, Lortab), and you ran out for example, taking any others including Oxycodone (Percocet, Percodan) will work for you. And by the way Oxycodone and Hydrocodone are very similar in nature and are equally addictive.  You should think about coming off everything.  You mention deciding not to take the Norco and taking the Percocet instead, same difference basically.  Also, you mention the Percocet possibly becoming an addiction.  You are addicted to it because of the cross-tolerance of opiates.  Basically, if you chucked out all your Norco, you'd be taking the Percocet and you'd not be going through "Norco w/d" because you "replaced it" with Percocet.  Still on an opiate.  w/d won't happen until you're off all.

To help clarify:  If one was addicted to marijuana and couldn't get more, taking a Percocet wouldn't help because marijuana is not an opiate like people think it is.  This only works when hooked on an opiate and switching it out for another.  If you were in the E.R. b/c you lost your meds right now and went into w/d and couldn't take it, they would administer whatever opiate they felt like I.V. to get you stable and refer you to help.  In other words, they could have given you morphine, and it would work on the Norco problem.  Remember, while some drugs are ,more potent than others, this is balanced out in the ordered strength, dosage, and route that the drug is administered.  In other words, you may say, "wow, morphine is way more strong than percocet".  Really you should think that morphine is more potent.  So a dose would be calculated that  would be the milliequivalency of what you're taking now.,

Thanks for all the replies...well i'm sure glad I didnt go nuts on the other pills, thinking that they are some kind of life saver. I'm glad I always posted on here and heard the consistent feedback about NOT doing it. It helps because who else can I talk to about it?  Even if I know better its still good to at least get some reality check! So for now I'm gonna stick to the taper on only norco (back at 4 per day by the way). I'm fortunate that supply is not an issue (not at 4 per day anyway) Supply of percocet would quickly become an issue though! (even at only one per day)  Hmmmm thx again.
