ibu, advil, aleve .motrin .how many is ok?

my back still bothers me most days, and i take one of the above everyday, usually about 1200mg thru the day (6 x 200mg) 3 in the morning and 3 in the early evening, is this dose going to give me ulcers eventually?

Everyone is different. It depends on your stomach.I had a doctor give me a script for Ibuprofen 800mg, twice a day for 3 months.For my back. I never had a problem with my stomach.I herniated 2 discs with S1 nerve damage.I gimped around for a year.Never once did my 6 doctors prescribe a narcotic pain killer.I begged and they all said forget it.   Many years later........Now I know why they didn't give them to me.   I don't know what is wrong with your back. But, It will get better.Try reading Healing Back Pain by Dr. John Sarno. That book really helped me. Also you can try other meds. I used to take Norgesic Forte and Skelaxin . Hang in there..........your back will heal..........

Jeeze, I would reduce all that OTC stuff as much as possible.  I knew a guy that blew out his esophagas eating all these pills... try looking into herbal and natural stuff????

The maximum dosage of Ibuprofen is 2400 mg per day given in three equal dosages, but should be more of an acute dosing (2-3 weeks maximum).

BrokenLeg, is that 2400 mg figure published info, or is that from the maker? I believe you and it sounds right, I was just wondering how you came to know that.

Thanks for the answers. I did see ibuprofen on a list of liver toxic (potentially) substances*, but I have heard many times over that acetaminophen is much worse. That's why I took vicoprofen and not vicoden. Only a dope fiend thinks that was a good thing (!)

Which OTC does everyone think is most effective and least toxic?

I'd vote for ibuprofen, but I do not know, and would like to.

OTC pain killers almost killed me in 2003.  Was taking 10-14 Advil a day for back/leg pain...docs would not give me anything else.  Wound up in ER one morning after two Diverticulum ruptured..spent 7 days in hospital.  Day 8 I had 3 ulcurs perforate during the night...I never felt them..and was back in the ICU for 3 days.

ER doc and my family doc finally said "Hey...you should not take that stuff." and gave me hydros.  I had 3 surgeons and 2 docs tell me they felt asprin/ibuprofen is what caused my problems.

I hate this saying but it is true....We are all different..PLEASE BE CAREFUL!
