Yes, it is bad to drink while you detox. For many reasons. Since two side effects of WD's is no energy and depression, drinking alcohol just makes things worse. Also, since you are an addict, you might want to consider not drinking. Just another mind altering drug.

My friends are going out for drinks tonight and I thought i would join'em. Alcohol, which i don't drink much of, usually gets me pretty energized and happy, not sad and depressed...

i'm scared it will slow down my recovery process.

Your on day 2 of detox. I think you can sacrifice, and stay home. The pills used to get you energized and happy also.

you're right sterling silver. more pollution my body doesn't need right now.

When you feel badly from wd and then you add alcohol to it, it just makes you feel worse.  It doesnt cover up the wd feeling cuz ur body is dependant on opiates and the only thing to make that feeling go away is time or opiates or something a doctor gives for that reason. When you drink in wds you are buzzed from alcohol AND in wd.  I personally cant stand that feeling!! Sterling has a good point about not drinking since your and addict AND an excellent point in saying that the pills once gave you energized and happy feelings too!  Just somethings to consider.  Peace ~

This is not only something I wouldnt recomend it also wont make the withdrawals any better, I,ve tried it many years ago during a oxy withdrawal & I felt still awful & even worse over the next few days. Theirs plenty of time to go out & hang out with friends after your detox has ended, relax & let your body adjust & do its thing. Penelope

Go Out! Stick to water! A beer or one Drink won't hurt your recovery.. And by all means if one of your friends has some medical Mary Jane, Yes! I know I'm going to get yelled at . but thank God for the Erb....    Shot Rock Day 20

I tried drinking two shots of vodka when withdrawing at night for bed (not enough to make me tipsy, just relax me). I wish I could say if it helped or not...I'm honestly not sure (it was a hellish two weeks, don't really remember). I'd say it helped a little at times...and made it worse at others.

But I never drink. So I can't say how it would affect a casual drinker.

I'm a recovering alcoholic, so I didn't drink while going thru wds..

I agree w/ sterlingsilver/nuredshuz/penelope...NOT a good idea.....
but if you really feel good enough to get out...go and drink something non alcoholic!!
Good luck...congrats on day 2!!!

by CleanUpTime, Mar 27, 2008 07:01PM
thanks; i think best thing to do is stay clean off alcohol and anything else that can harm my body. i think it may make me feel a little better to have a drink or so, but i think if i am feeling hung over the next day, it will make everything million X worse.

thanks all for the comments & Support; i never knw these forums would or could help, but after using it the past 2 days, it really does. There really are a lot of nice people out there that care!

Thanks!

personally when i drink i have a good time, but as soon as i am by myself i get real depressed and start to fein and crave really bad

by duckandcover, Mar 27, 2008 07:34PM
I can't imagine adding an alcohol hangover on day 3 of withdrawals.  Talk about adding to the misery.  The fact that you're even going out on day 2 is commendable.

2 cents..

by flmagi, Mar 27, 2008 08:50PM
Drinking will also lessen your resolve to stay off the drugs.  What you don't need at this time is anything that may make you weak and cave in to any cravings. Besides a hangover on top of withdrawels??  AHHHHH  lol  How much more hell could ya be in? lol
Hang in there,
Magi

You should read armymedic's post on transerring of addictions. Not to say that going out and having a few drinks will make you an alcoholic but it is something to think about. I don't know about you but I think that most of us addicts got into the situations we're in b/c we used pills, alcohol, pot, coke, whatever to make us feel good when we felt bad and didn't want to deal with anything uncomfortable or negative.

And, if you don't agree with any of that; alcohol will certainly impair your judgement and may cause you to make a bad decision that you'll later regret about taking pills.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes. Either way, we're all here to support.

Didn't go out drinking! Going to lay off it for a while until my WDs subside and my body gets back to normal!

:)

Day 3 of WDs; woke up at 5am and coudn't fall back to sleep. Went, got breakfast, ate and went back to sleep. Woke up at 8:30 for work...AHHHH...

Overall though, not feeling that bad, luckily. Still not 100%, more like 60%, but much better than day 1 and 2 that's for sure.

Thanks everyone for the support and advice! it is very much appreciated!

Stay away from the Alcohol. Your addiction to pain pills is probably the result of you having a pre-disposition toward addiction. If you have that predisposition, and you start drinking alcohol, then your mind will appreciate the alcohol in a way that you will not realize until months down the road when you find yourself at the bar, whooping it up with your friends and feeling sick to your stomach after you just pounded the 3 rum shots that someone said you could not do. When you realize that you are enjoying alcohol too much, how long will it be before you start doing pain pills again as a result of you deciding to stop drinking because you thought you were starting to develop a problem....? See my point? Get a handle on this addiction first. What that means is identify how/why it occured. Do you have a predisposition to dependency and addiction. Do you have an addictive behavior. To fully recover, you need to do more than just stop taking the pills, I would recommend that you get some counseling too so you can understand your addiction. Once you understand it, you can take steps to avoid wrapping yourself around another devestating addiction that can hurt and kill you. Don't be in a hurry

I drink 14+ tall boys a day. I am at hour 30 w/o a beer. If I could smoke some pot I would. I quit drinking, smoking cigarettes and shooting dope that way one time. But, at the present I can not smoke. I am an all day drinker. mostly beer. No dope anymore but, I smoke cigarettes again when I drink. I have lost the desire to drink. To fight the w/d I had a few cups of coffee this morning with a half shot of kahlua. It helped but, the coffee made me jittery as I am not used to coffee anymore. But hey that is what us alcoholic people drink when we stop drinking alcohol! Well then I got a water bottle and started drinking water like crazy. 3 or so bottles in a row. It helped make me feel full like beer does. If you are strong enough to stop at 1 or 2 it will help you be able to sit in your skin w/o pulling your hair out. You can not lie to yourself. Only you know the answer. If you are not strong enough then ride out the storm. Try not to substitute one addiction for another. I have been there done that and I have the scars to prove it. And I didn't even get a damn t-shirt. Best of luck to you and, all whom may read this.

while i was weaning down if i felt really crumby some evenings i would have a glass of wine. it is not so strong and just made me feel a little mellow and it made me sleepy.
getting hammered of course would make you feel totally sick the next day. but i do not think a little wine hurts. you are on the right track though, getting out and doing some fun things will make you feel better. i went thru some weird uneasy feelings and the more you interact with others the smoother it goes- so it seemed.
