is it too soon?

by LIZZIE LOU, May 26, 2008 08:00PM
for those of you who do not know...my son is a crystal meth addict.

i am reading the book "tweak"...by nic sheff...who tells his story of meth addiction and recovery.  it is interesting and i would like to give it to my son in a couple of days to read.  my question is...he has been clean for 7 days today...woohoo...and i wonder if reading about meth, in such descriptive details, would maybe make him crave.

any thoughts???

It depends on how the drug is being portrayed in the book.Is it glamorizing use ? As long as its not it might be a good time to have him read.

I think if it is very descriptive it could be dangerous right now.  I remember a post from someone on here that was craving and it got very descriptive. It upset quite a few people.  I would say it's probably too soon.

I am not familiar with said book - but it's hard to comprehend how a book about meth could promote it. You may have to use your judgment on this one....your son needs to look at the book sometime - as you are aware, he will be tested in life - 7 days clean might be a shade soon. Consider his history, is this his first shot at getting clean? How did he accept the idea of rehab? I would think that you have read the book. I would probably wait another week - but go with your gut feelings....

I know your story and I know you are hoping for the best and willing to do what is needed to recover your children.  However, I would stand in the background for awhile and make sure it sticks before you "help" with reading or other assignments.

I agree with traveladdict, but I have to say it was so wise of you to post that question here before acting on an initial thought.  That itself so obviously shows  how much you care about him and want to help him.  I've been there too.  Congrats on the seven days and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that he can share with you many more.  One day at a time.

I think he is going to do what he wants to do no matter what.  If I am not mistaken this has been the pattern right?  It is nice that you have good intentions though. Good Luck

Im not sure about that, really depends on him.  I wasnt familiar with your story until now but I just want to say what a special mom you are to try and read and learn about your boys addiction like that and to worry about all the little things while helping him recover.  You remind me of my mom.  I know it must be hard but your strength and understanding is a unique thing.

Hey Lizzie. When I was detoxing back in January I read a book calle The Heroin Diaries. It is a book by Nikki Sixx. He is the bass player for a band called Motley Crue. The book was riveting and very very discriptive. It actually grossed me out a few times. This book actually helped me through my detox. One reason was I could'nt put it down and the other was because I saw how bad this stuff was and made me think I don't want to go down that road. That being said everybody is different and I haven't read that book. If this book portrays meth as being something horrible like it is then I don't think it is a bad idea.

hey, lizzie, been around for awhile and know your/his story....and pray for you all the time...i agree with most of the others who posted here....might just be a TAD bit early right now....timing is probably everything now....would wait just a little more.....i know how hard it is, being mommies, we want to HELP HELP HELP HELP all the time in any way we can.....you have a WONDERFUL idea to help with that book, no doubt about that at all....perhaps in just a little more time, it will be the perfect thing....hang in there....and all my prayers and blessings are still with you guys....
