I take xanax for anxiety. It's a benzo. I can't take any of the new SSNRI's either. I'm on a very old antidepressant in the tricyclic family. Elavil (amiltriptyline) I take it at bed time because it has a sedative in it. I've been on it for a number of years. I'm at 300 mg's but it has been raised over the years to keep it at a theraputic level. A person just starting it would probably only need 20mg.
Hope this has helped......Take Care.....LS

Hope you don't mind me jumpin in...XOXO

Have you tried the 5HTP yet???
they don't like to give benzo's like valium for depression.. mainly because of the addictive properties and they work on a different part of the brain..
You could also ask your doctor about tryptophan... it is only by prescription.. but it is a more natural remedy for depression that does not act like SSRI"s do.. which I know you have a problem with.
Years ago.. tryptophan was available OTC then one bad contaiminated batch from somewhere turned up.. It was in the 80's I think.. they pulled it and made it prescription only so that they FDA could test it.. Like a week later Prozac was put onto the market.. prior people took the tryptophan.. then the drug co took over.. Its interesting stuff actually..
