I have to be creative about dealing with the pain in my ankle and legs. I have made my own bed buddy type heating pads to be able to use them in various situations. Heating up the joint gives me enough relief to at least stop thinking that narcotics would make the pain go away. You can make a heating pad with some cloth or a small pillow. Quilt little compartments and fill them up with rice. Add a couple of velcro straps. Spray a little water on the pad. The rice will absorb the water and when microwaved for about two minutes will get very warm and stay warm for awhile. You can make one to fit that you can use almost anywhere you can find a microwave. By the way, this can also be very helpful for RLS and other symptoms of withdrawal like the shivering and cold sweats and it can even help nausea by warming your stomach. It's very comforting.

Hello----
somehow I figured that my leg pain was caused more from opiate abuse than what is actually wrong with them....Kolo13 I will get ten bed buddies if it helps my legs..wish I could strap them on and take them to work with me...lol....I went to work today and dont you know I MADE IT!! I am still alive pain and all but I still made it with ibuprophen only...I know what u mean about the weather changes and since it has been raining here for ohhhh about a week and a half that really *****!!! I had went to a physcial thereapist who did like ultra sound thearpy on my feet but I almost jumped out of my skin as they are very sensitive to touch. I will keep trying hot baths help but I work in a nursing home and I doubt very much if my patients would wait on me while I go take a hot bath...lol but I will have to grin and bear it and when I get hope soak all night if need be...I know being an addict that I am looking for my wonder drug to come take my pain away but as you said only makes it worse...thank you for your comment nice to know my legs arnt the only one bothering me and if you can make it through that terrible accident and manage then I can to you must be a very strong person and I hope I can be as strong as you....THANKS SO MUCH!!! KEEP FIGHTING!! :)

My leg is aching from hip to knee, on the front part of the leg.  This is different from the sciatic type pain I have had in the past.  I dont know if its opiate driven or a genuine pain.  The only thing I know for sure is that narcotics have to stop being my number 1 way of dealing with pain.  My doc once commented to me that I seem more sensitive to pain while on oxys, after I nearly hit the ceiling getting my flu shot.  That got me thinking for sure.

So now I am trying massage, physio, stretches, anything.  Havent won the war yet, but I think I understand that I am in one now!!

Oh god, the irony of taking opiates for pain in your legs. I was hit by a drunk driver and had my foot torn off at the ankle and all my lower leg bones broken. I took opiates for pain and of course became an addict.  It took me so long to realize that it was making it worse. I not only destroyed my bodies natural ability to fight pain but the muscle tension and spasms that are a part of WD can really zero in on any weakness from previous injuries and just torture you. Now I have an addiction problem to deal with and it seems like my legs are going to hurt a lot every day for the rest of my life. And forget about changes in the weather. "Oh, daddies hitting himself in the legs really hard with a stick again, rain must be coming". And sure enough, here comes the rain. I'm right every time. But please don't let the fear of pain make you crazy. That fear is a symptom of your addiction. In fact, I'm sure you know things that help at least a little bit when you hurt. Get a "bed buddy". It's a beanbag you can put in the microwave and it will stay hot and transfer heat to your foot for a while. Find a reflexologist. I had someone rub my feet professionally and it brought me back from a failed surgery that looked like it was going to put me in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. I'm going to see her today. It definitely takes away the pain for at least a little while and it increases the blood flow to my feet. That is how she helped me begin healing when my surgeon just said "Sorry, this surgery doesn't work for everyone. Do you need anything for the pain?"

My legs hurt through the first month.  For me though, I had no other reason to believe the pain was caused by something else.  I believe it was my brain's last chance at getting me to feed it more opiates.

Day 34 for me from 450mg+ per day oxycodone IR.

Thanks I think I am going to ride it out a llil longer if I got to the doc and they give me a script for any narcotics not sure I could say no....everytime in the past when I would TRY to quit opiates the leg pain always brought me back (and of course I am an addict..lol) but sometimes they even hurt when  was on the opiates but usually only when it was time for more pain pills...I have been to 2 foot doctors, and orthapedic surgon, and my primary doctor....all they found was I had some perhpial nuropthy (sp?) meaning my blood dosnt flow as fast as it should...could that be causing all this pain...the doc made it sound like my legs shouldnt hurt...and a doc and many others told me the narcotics make you think your in pain when your really not...so what should I do wait it out a little while longer?  I go back to work today after 5 days off and I am scared I know they are gonna hurt...also doc gave me anxiety meds to take as needed and I think I need one now cause I am scared to death of going back to work and I am panicking but I dont want to trade one addiction for another as I here benzo are worse to get off of...I only have taken the xanx (0.25mg) the last 3 nights to sleep but not during the day....grrrrr I dont know what to do!!!!

What Lesa says is right given the breaks, your pain is probably a combination of post WD stuff and after affects of the broken bones be it arthritis or the legs being aligned wrong given a tendancy to limp. Or it could be you had a problem there all along and it was masked by all the pain pills!

I deal with foot pain and it does cause a difference in the way we walk. you might want to have a x-ray of your foot arthritis forms where there have been breaks.. I also dealt with leg pain for awhile. I walked around a ball fiend with my dogs everyday for about 6 weeks and they would be sore when I started but I would just walk it off and it would help so much with the rest of the day.. Hope it eases for you soon and Congratulations On 12 days !! lesa

Thank you for your input...they hae been hurting for a while since day one off of pain killers...granted maybe not as bad...I guess I will give it a while before I see a doctor about it...a year ago I broke the 4th and 5th metatarsal bones in my foot and they still hurt till this day...sometimes causeing me to limp....do you think that is why my legs hurt so much?  thanks for the quick respond....filling with sand is a good way to describe it... THanks that helps alot ::)

Can never be certain of course but its most likely WD/addiction related. Opiate abuse really messes with the joints, mine felt like someone had filled them with sand for the first couple of weeks, however they are fine now at day 38. In fact they have recovered to a better condition than when I was using...

I asked about the feet as they are the bit of the body most sensitive to that IMO with all those little bones there. A good way to check for damage there is to take off your socks and shoes and relax your foot, if its relaxed state is "clawed" as opposed to flattish. If so have a word with a chiropodist (sp), you might need some shoe inserts to correct it. Feet being messed up could explain the leg pains after walking as if you feet are out of alignment it messes up everything else above them.

Other thing is you could be having a wave of physical WD symptoms, if the pain is new and goes away within 24 that could be it.

Please bear in mind I could be rambling incoherently based on my own experience ^^

First, well done on day 12!

With the leg, is it joint or muscle pain? Also is it localised anywhere, or everywhere? Do your feet hurt?
