Narcan should not be given to addicts who are wide awake. It cruel and imcompetant. It happened to me twice that I can remember when I was on methadone. It only lasts a few hours but they were the worst 2 hours of my life! I hope you son is doing better.
Narcan is a code drug and can be administered by paramedics by protocol...the "methadone" word may have stuck in their ears and OD was in their minds...narcan does not last very long so it will wear off quickly that is why when a patient comes in in respiratory depression from narcotics...you have to wach them as the narcn wakes them up for a little while, wears off and the narcotic and respiratory depression come back...it would have sent him into worse WDs than he was in tho...to the max for a short time and would have been very uncomfortable...the paramedic must have been thinking "overdose" or just was not well trained on withdrawals...I dont think they are allowed to give IV benzos as that would have helped the seizure much better
These docs, nurses and medics give narcan way too freely. I don't think he will have any residule problems and he should have never been given the shot. I was under the impression that it is only to be given when a person is out. I was given narcan shots twice when awake (without my knowlege) on methadone and suffered big time. It even left me traumitized. Once the medics gave me a shot a lied about it. I knew I had been narcaned because I felt so sick and panicked and like my limbs were on fire. It is cruel to give narcan to awake addicts but sadly it happens too often.
why would they administer narcon for a seizure? it wasnt an overdose, right? he was, if anything in mild withdrawals from the drop in dose of methadone...how or why would narcon even be necessary in this case?
seriously, i am asking because i really dont know...
I was an EMT for seven years.A Paramedic [at least 5 years ago, whenI was in EMS] can deliver Narcon without doctors orders. I don't know for certain if you should be worried about anything creeping up because of it but I really do doubt it. The Narcon could not have killed him ,no,the Medic most likely thought he/she was dealing with an overdose . Did you find out from the hospital why tapering off the methodone caused him to have a seizure? I went off 25mg. c/t,I have not yet heard of anyone having a seizure from the methodone. I'm glad to hear your son made it through.God Bless.
you need to ask EMS if doctor ordered the Narcon.. Paramedic will usually get orders from doctor on radio to induce but not always.. I think they still qual to give it. I would have wanted a doctors order but with overdose you only have a small window to save pt.. That is probally what they were thinking he was ODing on Methadone.. Talk to the people that ttransported him,,
