long term naltrexone use ???

long term naltrexone use ???

I have been cloean of opiates for 11 months now, and been on Naltrexone for this time, firstly implants and now tablet form. I have recently been feeling full of regret, very emotional and tearful, I have been informed this amy be due to the long term use of Naltrexone, and lack of natural endorphins , so i have been advised by my CDT Nurse to start thinking about coming off of them, is this right?  Other wise, my life is so good compared to what it was, I am happy, but just feel like the past keeps wanting me to remember how bad things were... could my 'miracle' now be becoming my tormenter?

The year anniversary is naturally an emotional time for addicts. I personally know people on Naltrexone for years with no problems. The only advice I can give is to try what your doctor suggests and see if it helps. I caution you to make sure you have a good support system around you, however. I took naltrexone for a while, and still take them occasionally during emotional times. It give me an added support system. That, along with AA and NA and my therapist and family makes a great system for me.

I think it can be a good tool but sooner or later you should taper off. One problem is that in case of emergengy, opiates will not work for a few days which could be bad in the case of an emergency, accident or burn. This drug has a few other uses that are helpfull and not related to addiction. all the best

merrygoround,

Congratulations on your 11 months.  I had a negative experience with Naltrexone.  I had an implant after I detoxed in June and my experience was very negative.  I experienced severe anxiety and some depression.  The anxiety was the worst I have ever experienced before.  Through process of elimination, I was able to determine that it was truly the naltrexone that caused the problem.  The instant the naltrexone dissolved, the anxiety and depression went away completely and I have not experienced any since.  Needless to say I did not continue taking naltrexone.  I agree with the other comments above - get your support system in place and speak to your doctor about the right move to potentially go off the naltrexone. Best of luck to you
