by recovery911, Aug 19, 2009 05:49PM
Well it is me again I have tried to do the short term sub and it dosen't work for me cause I fall back into the habit cause I start dropping the sub to fast to soon, so now I went to see a Doctor that specialist in substance abuse only and he is really good and he up my dose from 3mg to 8mg, but anyways my question is for the ppl that know about sub and long term my DR. wants me on 8mg for a while and then start dropping but not fast. what is your opinion?
And this is for the ppl on sub cause I know a lot of members don't belive on sub.
Thank you.

what you are going to do or what your doctor is thinking is very common. I was on 32mgs of suboxone per day for over 9 months and would have continued if not for an accident and then having to start all over and going to a methadone clinic, but anyways, some ppl can get away with being on sub for 21 days or for 6 months, but most people with opiate addictions have to be on a treatment program and medication, along with therapy for much longer time period. You cant just detox take a pill for 21 days and then be completely saved from addiction..I wish...I knew after two years of treatment now that I need to be on a treatment medication for at least a year or two just to be comfortable with myself that if the opportunity of using was presented to me I could say with a strong face NO, and I know that a couple months of suboxone treatment or methadone treatment will not allow that..it takes time. everyone is different..some ppl stay on treatment meds the rest of their lives, those are more of a rare thing, but thats just how it is sometimes...for most ppl if you follow your treatment program properly, go to meetings, take your meds correctly and actively put an effort in fighting your addiction you could be on sub for 6 months and then slowly taper off to avoid any discomfort or wds...everyone reacts differently, but from my own personal experiences and from speaking and helping many others that is what I have found to be the case 99.9% of the time...you are definitely on the right track, follow your treatment plan, make sure what you and your doc are deciding is something you fully deep down agree with, dont even let anyone rush you, or at the same time slow you down, you know deep down in your heart what level or pace you can go at and you need to truly listen to that...if you follow that along with your treatment program your chances of success are almost 100%..and to even make it even more of a possibility use this forum alot! this is what it is here for, for questions, for venting, for helping, its one big family full of ppl who can relate in some way or another and it truly is another full form of group counseling, so use this amazing free opportunity and stick with your treatment plan, you got this for your at the last hurdle, best of luck to you and stay strong...Christos

Suboxone puts addiction into remission for most people. Kinda like taking insulin for diabetes. Quit taking the insulin and you're still sick. But, working on recovery while taking the Sub will put you in a better place when you eventually come off. Do you have a recovery aftercare plan? What do you think you need to do to deal with the addictive behavior?

Yes I'm going to a therapist now every week to get to the bottom of my addiction problem. should I do anything else?

If you're open to it, then I'd try everything. Therapists are great. NA/AA is cheap group therapy for me..along with my aftercare group at my rehab..and, a therapist. I was ready to try anything to stay off these things.

Long term Sub and methadone are reffered to as "harm reduction" or replacement therapies" If you can't make it now without something I think lower dose methadone would be better . It's works better for cravings or drug hunger for hrad core addicts and in the case of an emergency it's easier for the medical people to deal with. all the best
