looking for advice

I posted this on the pain management forum and em looking for knowledge on what I'm being offered.. please forgive as I pasted my precious post. I'm not looking for drugs but I'm wondering what else they offer. I will admit it has frightened me to be in this position as I have taken great pains to be free of drugs but do live with chronic pain due to the many years of abuse and other conditions.. any insight would be so helpful as every part of my being is screaming no..
Hello my name is lesa I'm a Drug Addict that lives with chronic pain.. I come to you all in hopes of learning about pain management and what it entails and the benefits you received.. I received a call yesterday from the pain clinic. they would like me to meet with a pain Dr. a Physiologist and a Pharmacist they would also like me to participate in a 2 1/2 hour class followed by a class once a week for 2 months.. I have been honest with my Dr.'s about my addictions and em on record as being a addict.. I'm here trying to educate myself on just what this entails and the benefits that others have received.. I'm going for alternative treatment such as acupuncture now.. I appreciate so much any that takes the time to read this and maybe educate me on what is being offered.. Thank you so much for your time.. lesa

Hi. Have you thought about Acupuncture? It's an amazing drug free option for pain relief.

The pills were never the problem. They are a symptom of your disease. Namely...your addiction. The meds can let you have a better quality of life. However, abusing them will lead you back down the same bad road. I think too many of us addicts adopt the all or nothing attitude towards pain relief medications, and thus needless suffering goes on. These medications were made for a purpose, to let those in pain lead a better quality of life. I think the ultimate key to successful pain management for addicts is that rigorous honesty we speak about. Telling your doctor what your real pain levels are. Not doubling doses or reducing time between doses. No going up on doses just for the high. And, definitely no taking the pills to mask emotional feelings. I think it's also important to have someone else be accountable for your meds. Having someone else "watch the shop" isn't giving in..it's just plain smart. I know you're scared of going back on meds...but, if you have to..and, your quality of life has become burdensome without some intervention...then go ahead and do what you have to do to regain a good quality of life.

On the other side, they can try to treat the pain with non-narcotic medications. This is your choice, and one they should respect. If you're interested, message me and I can send you a medication guide that lists the three levels of just about every medication you could take. They have Level 1 (Never take), Level2 (take with caution), and Level 3 (safe for addicts).

Thank you for your responses.. I have been a addict for many years and my fear is so great that the solution will be drugs.. this is why I came here for advice. I have many conditions that I live with probably the 16 screws and 3 plates in my foot are the most limiting but I also have stenosis arthritis bulging and compressed disk I have received the shots in my spine in the past.. I have one kidney that is at stage 3 and stage 2 liver with hep C. that we can not treat.. Such a big part of me wants to just say no as my fear is great then another part says maybe you will learn something.. I think I'm leaning towards thank you but no thank you.. I appreciate your advice so very much.. It frightens me sometimes when my pain pushes my thinking onto other things.. I have been having to deal with Dr.s a lot lately and I think it has me on edge.. This to will pass.. warmly lesa

hi good to see ya post ive been down the pain management road with some sucess as well as some horror storys ive had 2 bad disks in my bake since i was 30 and 1 in my neck since 40 im 47 now and I think ive been down most avenues  for the most part they treat your symptoms rather then your illness ive taken pain meds as well as aim point shots (cortazone) in my spine been thew much physical therapy and they finly offered
me methadone as a last resort and i foolishly went on it for pain management so now
ive been down 6yrs of methadone form 150 to 4mg today im almost off it but still a tuff withdrawal to go, they have came along way with drug therapy today they have nuro/blockers that block pain differently then with opioids so go see what they offer you but BEWARE....some of there fixes come with a high price....you become an addict best of luck to ya Gnarly   .

Hi, I was on pain meds for 7 years do to an injury. I to became an addict and finally saw what horible things that were happening in my life because of the meds. I have been off the meds now for 20 days. My tolerence to pain has increased over this short time and I have been able to manage with just OTC meds. Your pain doctor will go over some of the optional drug free ways to deal with the pain. There is an electronic implant that has had nothing but great things said about it. Tends units. Non narcotic meds such as lyrica which I had some good response to for a while but discontinued when my pain tolerance increased and no longer needed it. What ever it is you decide on I recommend you research it all on your own and make your own decision. You may find out you dont need anything once your tolerence to pain goes up.
