looking for some help

Hi,
I've been reading this forum for a couple of weeks now and it looks like a lot of people get better here and get all kinds of help.  I'm currently taking about 5 20 mg oxycontin a day and 5 percocet.  I've been on them for about 5 years and really want to get off.  The trouble is every time I try I get really sick, so I just take more.  My doctor was prescibing them but not enough, so now I buy them from the street.  I can't afford to do this any more, nor do I want to.  I can't go c/t, or at least I don't think I can while I'm working.  Can anyone help?

giving them to your hubby is a GREAT starting point! Please keep us posted on his reaction, and how you are doing!

Hi,
I could give them to my husband.  He has no idea that I'm struggling with this as much as I am, actually I think he thinks that I'm off them, and He'll probably be upset at first because I'm always harping at him about money, now I'm the one spending it stupidly, but he's very supportive and I know he would help.  If I give them to him, what should I tell him to give me every day?  I'd like to get off this before my daughter has surgery because I'm sure she will have all kinds of meds.

If I'm correct, they don't have suboxone in Canada, but I can't say for sure. And your friends is right, DON'T do the methadone! You will be in way worse shape than you are now! If you can stick to a good taper schedule, that may be a good idea, but tapering isn't for everyone. It surely wasn't for me! Do you have someone that could hang onto your pills and only give them to you on schedule??

Hi again!

Tapering is tough business. It takes determination and a lot of other stuff. Whenever I suggest a taper, or do a taper schedule, I ALWAYS suggest that someone hold them for you and dispense them. We, as addicts, cannot stick to something as this.

BTW..nobody does "getting clean" wrong. there is no right way to do it...just as long as you do.

So, you have been thinking all day..what do you think now??? How do you think you may be the most comfortable doing this?

I suppose I could try and taper down first.  I actually have cut my dose in half in the last month, under my doctors order.  He wants me off this by the end of the month, but he has no idea that I take more than he prescribes.  I really just want to be done with this whole thing but I also don't want to sabotage myself by doing it too quickly.  Today I've only taken 2 20 mg oxys so far.  When I get home, I'll take some valium and crawl in bed, so I may not have to take more.  I have no idea if I'm doing this right, though.

Do not move to methadone !  That would be so much worse from what I hear. I am flmagi's sister and we detoxed together and no we couldn't work. I have heard of people doing it, but there was no way I could.  It is like the worst flu. I truley believe that detox has to be a priority, if it can't be for you now, then make a plan. When can you get some time off ?  Maybe start to taper down until you get that time. Sometimes we have to make it all about us..hense the name allaboutmary. I just said to myself the world is going to have to wait.  I feel so bad for people with children and other things that can't be put aside. These people are my hero's. Taking care of children while detoxing has got to be so tuff. So start today with making a game plan. I think the more thought out your plan is the better chance for sucsess.  I always think (what if I was in a car accident or something) in the hospital, others would find ways to cover for you. This is the way I justified my time off to detox. If I continued with the pills I would have wound up in jail or dead. So I chose to be selfish for a week and get clean. Sorry I am just rambling on.  Get a plan and stick with this forum. Keep us posted.

i was on about the same dosage as you, and for a similar amount of time. I think if you want to continue working, you should try tapering. I only tapered down to 80mg a day, and then did ct. Personally, I couldnt have worked for the first 6 or 7 days. It was really really hard to get any sleep for one thing. If you taper, you will have to go through the withdrawl symptoms longer (you'll have them while you're tapering, but they shouldnt be so bad as that you cant work.........just my opinion.......good luck

I have never heard of suboxone.  Do they have that In Canada?  I think we have methadone here, is that the same thing?  I know someone on methadone and she told me NOT to do it, that she wishes that she had never done it, now she can't get off it.
flmagi- did you work through your withdrawals?  is it just like the flu?  I think I take quite a bit but not sure as compared to others that I have seen on here.  I would like to work through it only because I have to take time off at the end of the month because my daughter is having surgery and I only have so many days to take.  I'm not stupid, I know it's going to be difficult to teach children, especially children with ADD, but I really want to try.  DO you think I should taper down first.  I could probably do that.

If you can schedule your detox and take a couple of days off, that would make it easier. Like, last pill  friday mid afternoon, around 2. By Sunday you'd have almost 2 1/2 days in. Then Monday & Tues. would give you 4 1/2 days. If you could take Weds. off, great, but you might be able to work thru Weds. Not easy but you could do it.  Just be sure to drink alot of fluids, protein bars & shakes, vitamins etc (all the stuff suggested on this forum).  Actually, keeping busy can help some.
Make sure you try to get alittle exercise in,  like walking alittle.  Lack of sleep is big problem.  But if you tell people you have the Flu, your lack of energy and feeling like death will be understandable to everyone.  It can be done. Even if you HAD to work through Mon. & Tues.  Really, Really ruff, but others have done it.  Keep coming to this forum. It will help and everyone is here for you.
Good luck and keep us posted.

No, you are definitely NOT crazy for going to work, you have no choice, same as me. I don't think the valium will stop the W/D's completely, but it will help. Can you get on suboxone?? Have you heard anything about it? I have TONS of information on my profile about it. I'm on it, and it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY! I consider it a miracle drug! It controls cravings and takes away W/D's, AND helps with pain...etc...

I used to take a boat load of Norco every day for over two years. I have a bad back, and am in pain all the time, but the sub controls that making life bearable again. I'm on day 29 today, and doing GREAT!

so will valium stop or slow down the w/d's.  I'd really like to do this at work if I can.  I an take time off, but will only feel guilty at home that they had to cancel my classes, don't need any more guilt.  If you thik I'm crazy for trying this at work, let me know.  Has anyone else ever tried it>  Imanaddict, what were you withdrawing from?:

Valium makes me REALLY sleepy, but I'm sure once they get in your system, that will die down some. Maybe start out taking them at night and see how they make you feel. When you wake up the next morning, see how you're feeling and compare to how they made you feel the night before. Maybe try taking half of one in the morning?? Being a little sleepy has got to be better than severe withdrawaling in a classroom. Just a suggesion....

I have some valium that I get prescribed for an anxiety disorder but don't take very often.  Can I take valium when I go to work, I've never tried that before.  Won't it make me really sleepy?

A lot of people, including myself have had no choice but to go to work in withdrawals. It CAN be done, but it was really really hard at the same time. Do you have any other meds, like benzos to help with it?

I'm not sure, I'm a computer teacher and I would be really difficult.  Because my position is so specialized I dont have a supply teacher,  so it makes it really difficult to take time off.  I may be able to take a couple of days, but I guess I wanted to know if its possible to try when you're working.  I really have not tried, just feel awful when I get up, so take a pill.

Hi and Welcome to the forum!

Is there a possibility that you can take some vacation time from work and get through the detox phase?
