methadone anxiety

Hi all! So im on methadone now for 2years. Stating im 2y clean. Recently I would say the last 6 months or so I started experiencing anxiousness, more and more. But now it has gotten to the point where its the most prominently side-effect of my mmt. Its starting to get debilitating. Heart palpitations, cold sweats also accompanied by sleeplessness. Im in a state of chronic anxiety. I started using xanax (have used/abused in past) so im quite tolerant to xanax. Ive gotten to such a place where my anxiety os so severe that it is affecting my normal day to day functioning. Im at a loss as its a bit of a catch 22 as I dont want to get addicted to xanax ontop of methadone... But at this current stage I do not seem to have a choice!? In the end I just want my life back.. Now the methadone has worked wonders, but now this unexpected side effect is looking to ruin all that. Any advice or words of wisdom will be appreciated as im at a loss.. Thanks ..

Hi and welcome!  I too am not a methadone expert so please be patient and one of our methadone vets will come along soon!  I do understand anxiety though and know that it can be debilitating!!! Maybe you should go back to the Doctor and see if he can try you on something else besides the Xanax!  Also you need to get some kind of therapy for the anxiety!  The pills usually dont cut it alone!  I have found that therapy has helped so much with my anxiety and helps to give me a new perspective!!  And it is dangerous to be on methadone and benzos together!  Especially if you arent being monitored!  How many mgs of Xanax are you taking a day?  Please be very careful with that combination especially since you have abused the benzos in the past!!!  Please keep posting and let us know how you are getting on!!

Xanax and methadone are both a central nervous system depressant as
Well as a respiratory depressant.
It is dangerous to be on them both at the same time.

Have you had an therapy/ counseling for your anxiety?

I am not a methadone expert but some folks on here are and they will chime in I'm sure.

Did you see a doctor about your anxiety? I mean you are on xanax, you must have a dr that knows what's going on, right?

What are you doing for your addiction? In terms of mental help. All of us addicts need that.
