my boyfriend is prescirbed methadone

My boyfriend and I have been together for 7 years off and on. We have a 3 year old daughter and just found out another on the way! One time we split up he became addicted to heroin and he was honest about it when we got back together. He came right out and told me he had been doing heroin everyday with this girl and he needed help because he wanted to stop. I was supportive but didn't really know what else to do for him besides keep him from doing it and just be there with him through the withdrawls. It was a miserable week of hell. Him being clean didn't last long... he started doing it behind my back. I knew I just didn't know what I could do about it and he always got so defensive when id ask him about it. So I started doing some research and sat him down to talk to him about the methadone clinic and what they had to offer. He agreed to give it a try. I came up with the $ to get him started there and he's been going for almost a year now. Its helping him significantly and because he's on the methadone he has no urge to do heroin. He said that even if he tried he wouldn't be able to feel it. The methadone gives him a little bit of the same tiredness and low libido as the dope did but at least its controlled and its wayyyy less expensive. He goes to get dosed every single day, he gets randoms, and he has a counselor that he can talk to about his recovery and its really all around a great deal. His dose has been upped quite a few times since he's been there. He is now up to 275 a day. mL i think. My question is, how long is he prob going to have to be on the methadone? And how hard is it going to be for him to be weaned off of it??

Oh bless you for enduring this. I don't know anything about methadone other than it took the life of my brother In law so this is a touchy subject for me!

I advise you to get help!! Get professional help.. A counselor, addiction therapist, ANYTHING!!!!!

This is a dangerous drug and that is a very high dose!

Please speak with someone that can help other than a methadone clinic.. Okay?? Please

HI .....well as far as how long it varys for each person if your actively seeking out aftercare like N/A or A/A seeing the conslor at the clinic eventually you will be strong enough to stand on your own 2 feet  275mg is a lot for anyone
and this will make it more difficult to get off.....have a talk with him and ask him how strong he feel in his recovery because coming off the stuff is slow like 2 mg Evey 2 weeks for most clinics so he will have quit a wile to get well wile detoxing at that dose he is probably noding off on you and lithagic so it would be a good idea to reduce his dose most people can get by on about 75 to 80mg of the stuff I am not aloud to discust doseing with you on the forum but thats just a general rule just know this the sooner he tries to get off the ezer it will be and its never ez methadone is a moster to come off of heroin may be more intence to come off of but it dosent keep you a sick for so long recovery can take some time it took me 90 days just to start to feel better then about 6 mo to really feel good again so the sooner he can start the better of he will be methadone is no way to live I was on it 6 1/2 yrs and the side effets are tearable my advise is get him off it as soon as posible good luck keep posting for support se if he wants to come to or site I have helped a lot of people off this drug if he needs help he will find it here good luck and God bless......Gnarly
