need help identifying brown powder

good friend of mine called today very upset. found very fine brown powder in breath mint container in her 21 year old daughters room. also found glass pipes, lots of $ and other paraphinalia. she called me cuz she knows i have been addicted for years and would probably know. she needs to know if there is a test or a way to identify this powder before she confronts her. i do not want to see it or taste it if i don't have to for obvious reasons. can anyone help??

It's ok, I've gone to NA site and found local site for this. Am waiting for response. This site has been very helpful to me reading the forum. I know I have to do something before it's too  late for him. Thanks all for writing to that other lady, it helped me too.

Your powder is either methamphetamine or heroin.....without further description of how she is acting or how she might be taking care of her business its hard to tell. Strong (lenghty) periods of activity followed by long periods of rest/sleep would indicate meth - also loss of appetite and weight. Most heroin would be used as a maintance up to several times daily - the merth will leave a much stronger chemical smell after smoked than the heroin will. And the meth is much more likely to be used via pipe.....good luck with your daughter - she needs you

i personally didnt see your concern for a young girl possibly headed in the wrong direction offensive AT ALL...your friend needs help with this and you are the perfect person to point her in the right direction,great best friend for sure!!
(lets just hope and prey it is not what we think, wouldnt that be great!?) i happen to think you did the right thing by asking..where else could you ask such a question without possibly causing trouble for you or your friend...this was the perfect place to do what you did. i think what you did was just great...give yourself a pat on the back, you deserve it!!

that's exactly what i did, ordered a test for her. called my local drugstores and they only sell urine tests. after i posted it occured to me there has to be something on the maket, and sure enough. that will eliminate any doubts for sure. thank you

just wanted to let you know i showed my friend the outpouring of responses to her problem and she could not help but face it head on after reading all of these posts. THANK YOU SO MUCH, you guys have probably helped save a young girls life! that is why i needed your input, rigth or wrong to identify it on this forum, i could not personally have looked or tasted it, i am still very fragile. and when it is someone you really care about, denial runs wild. i needed to hear this input from you guys to be able to come to terms, even though in my heart i think i knew. then i thought last night, why not show this to her, and that was turning point for her. she has watched me suffer thru w/d's, and has been a huge support to me, she was also aware of this forum and how much it helps me continue my fight every day, now it has helped her as well. trying to talk her into reaching out for support here too. will let you guys know if she does, maybe we can all offer guidance. this is gonna be a whole new world for her, and i want her to see the truths behind addiction.

is there anyway you or she can buy one of those drug tests from the pharmacy, and use that to test this powder?  this way when the daughter is confronted, you know exactly what you are dealing with?
i am not even sure if this would work or not, you might have to dissolve some of it in a little water/liquid first?
just an idea that i had...the drug tests cost around $40 bucks for one that tests for ALL substances...worth a try maybe?

I just wanted to say to you I really hope for your friends sake her daughters and yours that it is purely innocent and that if it turns out that it is not, is that I wish I had, had someone like you to be in my corner it would have made a hugh difference. brown powder, most definetly heroin, unless it smells like pot, some hash can be in a powder form. But heroin is in huge demand these days now that oxy and pill opiates have goen so expensive.  Heroin is starting to take over all over the country.

thank you all so much for your help, i am really afraid she is going down the same path i did, this is a huge shock. guess now i can at least be there for her knowing what she is gonna be facing. still waiting for a call back, hope my friend is coming to terms with this.

sounds like heroin to me too. but i also agree with house. sit her down and confront her. if they are living in moms house, and slingin dope, she could have her house seized, just because she unknowingly let drugs be sold or stashed there. confront her, and if need be , turn her in. then maybe she can get the help she needs to clean up...

I think the big H too, also what part of the U.S. are they in..Heroin is not big in all city. And depending on what part of the u.s. also has alot to do with the color.. Like in califorina, the black tar is all over. very hard to find the white stuff....

their is one way she can tell now, put a little in a spoon add a couple off drops of water fire a match under it till sizzles it will separate from the cut and be an amber color with a little pool of white powder on the bottom, has a distinct smell. it would take one minute, then flush she will know for sure.

not to me, but like i said, she is believing it could be an herbal powder. i think if it wasn't for that excuse she would tend to believe me more. but, hard to convince a mother in denial not to believe her own daughter. i know she'll come around, and i just ordered her a identification kit. 21 year olds are great at covering up, she wants to be 100% sure. if it was my kid, i would have layed it all out and waited for him to come home! but, we are a lot more street smart. all i can do is sit back and wait for her to come to terms, then be there for support. i hope to God this girl isn't going down the path i did.

meth or crank is white or yellow, Heroin from black tar to brown to a very light brown depending what it is cut with, from the pipe (you can smoke heroin) to the cash I would say heroin.

its the part about the  $$$ ching ching, that would scare me too.  Possession with the intent to sell is not pretty on a youngins  record.   take it all an talk to her...asap.   being that you were once on heroin.......I think you know and does it really matter what it is??..
