need help with m daughter

My daughter is 24 and had a baby in April but was addicted to opiates before and during the pregnancy  she crushed and snorted them. Doing this she messed up her nose and throat, she said it made a hole in her nasal cavity and everything she eats or drinks comes out her nose and when she talked it was so nasal sounding I could not understand what she was saying, so she started snorting Tylenol to fill the hole and be able to eat drink and talk. When I figured out what she was doing I forced her to stop doing that and took her to an ENT he said there is a HORRIBLE build up of a white substance in her nose an the back of her throat.  He told her to mix sea salt baking soda and water and uea bulb syringe and flush it thru her nose until it comes out her mouth.  She has been doing this but she is still in bad shape, she can't use a fan or air cond. it hurts and makes her nose bleed, her gums and teeth hurt. She can't eat much of anything except for popcicles. I feel bad but don't know what to do she's lost 10 lbs. in about 1 week only gets out of bed to use the restroom. doesn't help with house or much with baby ( baby boy is beautiful and healthy, did have withdrawals a little at birth, but perfect now :0).  Is all of this normal someone please tell me something. Thank you

Pam... Congrats on the grandbaby! I do not know alot about snorting... has your daughter quit using totally? If so when did she stop? She could possibly still be in wds if she just recently quit. Did the ENT say there was nothing to do to fix this?

Someone will come along w/more info than I have.... sorry I am not much help. There is lots of information on this forum and helpful people. I can say she is very lucky to have a Mom like you and that baby boy is lucky to have you as a Grandma!!

Thank you, she has been off of the opiates since April 10 as far as I know she swears that she has not done anything except for the Tylenol and she quit that almost 2 weeks ago. The ENT suctioned some of the build up out but told her the build up was to bad for her to use the mixture that I mentioned at least 2 times a day, but she does it 5 or more times. He said that when the build up gets wet it becomes like concrete. Now when it comes out it is little chunks like a crushed pill. Her use was vico and then percocet up to 15 a day.  Thank you for saying that they are lucky, but I consider myself lucky to still have her alive and I am lucky to have my handsome little guy.

Congrats on your new little grandson. I really dont have any advice for you but wanted to let you know that you are not alone and someone with more info will be on.  The forum was pretty quiet due to the holiday.  You are lucky to have your daughter here and cleaning up now.  Have you talked about some aftercare with her or getting her into a support group?  She is very lucky to have a caring mother on her side and that little handsome guy is lucky to have you as a grandma!!!  Hang in there and keep watching your post. More will be here probably tomorrow.           sara

Thanks you  she has started counseling and AA ( Narc-Anon is not steady around here one week there is a meeting but not the next week) she goes to the meetings when she has the energy which is not to often.  When the baby tested positive for opiates at birth children services got inolved and he came home in my custody. It is part of her case plan to go to meetings 1 a week which she doesn't have the energy for. She looks horrible very thin, white as a sheet, and dark circles under her eyes.

w/d's can be really nasty also.  do you suppose she has some post partum going on too??  I wish i had some answers for you.  I know i am 70 days clean and the energy is just coming back.  Takes along time.  I am glad the baby is being taken care of.  Hopefully she will feel better soon.  Hang in there.  You are doing a great job.  Support from a family is so important.  Keep us posted.                 sara

Once she has flushed all the white gunk out of her nose, the ENT will be able to better assess all the permanent damage to her nasal septum.  If her diet issues continue, she'll probably have to have surgery to repair it.  (similar to having 'a nose job')  I wouldn't advise doing the flushes more than twice a day like the doctor said.  It will take some time for the substance to break up and be flushed out, but if she does it too often, it may make things worse.  The weight loss is probably a combination of her not being able to eat properly, breastfeeding (if she is), and withdrawl.  Get her some protein shakes or ensure.  Carnation instant breakfast is a great supplement as well.  The ongoing aftercare and getting to the root of why she was using is going to be the ultimate key in her staying away from drugs.  Like the others said, she's lucky to have you, but she has to do the work of staying clean.
