LOL @ Queen...

I changed my routine a bit...instead of having a cig when i take the dog out (as I only smoked outside) I take my coffee instead...and go out front instead of out back...

driving to work, those places (stop signs, lights, etc) where I would light up, I drink some water, or pop a peice of gum in my mouth

morning break at work...take a walk, come here, text a friend, brush my teeth...

Lunch...same as above...

afternoon break, I usually eat an apple or some celery (apple will 'wake you up' better and more naturally than coffee or soda...that's why i have one in the afternoon).

On my way home, i drink water (refreshed from water cooler) and or pop gum in mouth...

the rest of the evening...i do some of the above or take deep breaths...open mouth breaths (let the air get into my throught-replacing the smoke)
sometimes at home i'll yell "I WANT A CIGARETTE!!!!!!.....ok, I'm over it" rofl...my man just laughs at me.

we gotta do what we gotta do...oh, sucking thru a cig sized straw also helps once in a while too.

good luck

Heard that if you change your ROUTINE in any way you have a greater sucess..of quitting smoking...(i.e. smoking and talking on the phone... drinking a cup of coffee...drinking PERIOD... driving in your car.. (with boys)...

I'm trying to quit talking on the phone and smoking FIRST... then.. boys in cars...just kidding  (Chicken hawk... cougar,,,)

hey girleee  havent seen you in the forum for a wile good to see you back...so ya wanna
quit smoking now...wow lots of changes in your life first narco/methadone now nicateen
well its not ez but it can be done..I found that tapering on cigs was like tapering on alcohol...for me both where impossible..you just sorta got to make up your mind and
put them down....I did it 3 yrs ago...first week I went out and got the patch but only did it for the first week because its the nicateen that your addicted to and I figured the quicker
it was out of my system the better ...I found that chewing black licorice (lickrish)
sorry bout the spelling ...but although im not that fond of it it does put a taste in your mouth and gets you by the hand to mouth thing rather well..I would chew thew a 1lb
bag every 2 days but it did seam to help alot again a buck a bag at walmart
cheep compared to cigs..but in the end you just got to say no to the cravings
at first they would last for an hr then as the days went by 1/2hr then 15 min
then 5 min till they finely just become a moment in time...today Im smoke free
I still get cravings sometimes...got alot going thew withdrawals but in the end
it is a choice you make  for me I had alot of incentive ...I watched my father smoke himself to death at the age of 56 and dident want to put my kids thew that so
the discomfort of quiting had some big rewards with it...I know it tuff but I also know it can be done...you have already quite the narco's so smoking wont be as hard as that
as least as far as im concerned...YOU CAN DO THIS girl just put your mind to it
and you to will be nicateen free...good luck and god bless...Gnarly

I feel for ya. I've been there. First time I used the patch and did it with my then boyfirend. Support of main person is key. But it was very hard! I was a total ***** for nearly a month. And went through periods of depression and NO energy. Must admit to smoking lots of pot to ease that "just want to smoke something" feeling. Also bought a pack of herbal smokes for difficult times, like an outdoor concert. Smelled terrible, tasted worse but it helped me not smoke a cigarette with nicotine in it for that one day!
But I stayed quit for several years.

Then after having my twin daughters and 5 months of breast feeding (no pot, no alcohol, no coffee during pregnancy and nursing--that was easy) all I wanted was a smoke once I didn't have to worry about their health. Eventually back to smoking up to pack a day. Then I found out I was pregnant again. Ha. Very stressful since my twins were only a year old! This pregnancy was a total suprise as we had intvitro for our twins. I thought, well I'm pregnant I will just quit of course right? Uh wrong! Hardest thing ever to do! I was a walking stereotype of a white trash mom! But I hid it from my husband, my family, everyone. Smoked outside my car hiding as people walked by so they couldn't see my bulging belly. Terrible!

Finally went to see a smoking cessation specialist who was awesome! (Found her in my hospitals help line) She was actually a lung doctor, can't think of the term but she didn't make me feel ashamed. She knew I was soooo embarrased to not be able to stop at 4 months pregnant! I was killing my baby, I'm educated I knew risks but nothing stopped me. She put me on wellbutrin along with mild doses of the patch. Combo worked great for me. I know there are other drugs out there too that help. The anti-depresant is sooo key to stopping because that boost of stimulant you have been giving yourself is gone. That with some nicotine patch helped me quit. I never told anyone what lengths I had to go to. So ashamed because I had been so healthy during my first pregnancy. Glad to say my son is 3 and very healthy! Whew! Scares me to think what damage I could have done if I didn't stop at 4 months. Unfortunately I started again after I finished nursing him. I know....but three kids is even harder than two! So mad at myself for doing that again.

Seeing a doctor specifically trained in this was a huge help. Can prescribe meds that will work for you, adjust them as needed, and come up with other ideas.

WIsh you the best in this very difficult task. You can and will succeed.

I know it is hardest thing I have ever done and something I need to do soon as I still smoke now. Promised my dr. I will quit within the year when I get through divorce and financial disaster. Because I know depression is hardest part of process. Have to be in a good place and feel strong to get through it.

febninthgirl,

Congrats on your willingness to try to quit.  I am a 30 year smoker (started when I was 13) and while I still smoke, I've cut down from a pack a day to two cigarettes a day.. and have stayed there for the past 18 months.. actually,  it wasn't really all that hard.   What I did was to identify certain times and circumstances that triggered my need for a cigarette.  For me, smoking was a matter of habit, so I looked at things like smoking while driving, talking on the phone.. after dinner... I think you get the idea.  Then, I identified the WEAKEST trigger, something I was confident that I could accomplish and made a pact with myself that I absolutely would NOT smoke at that particular time.  For me it was giving up the mid morning cigarette break at work.. I took my time and didn't rush the next step, but once I stopped craving the cigarette that I cut out..  I moved on to the next one on the list... and so on..   It was important to start out small with something manageable to gain a sense of accomplishment and to never light up a cigarette without asking myself.. do I need this now?  Can I wait 20 minutes?  and in 20 minutes.. can I wait 20 more..or can I just skip this one all toghether.  Quitting completely is so finite and overwhelming.. take small steps and build upon the little successes.

As it stands now, I have two cigarettes every night before bed... and I'm happy with that. Luckily, I believe that I don't have a strong physical addiction to smoking.. so that may have make it easier for met to cut down to the level that I  have.

Now, if 10Pm to midnight would disappear.. I could get rid of all my bad habits.  LOL
