Technically one could become dependent but there's nothing there to crave so I wouldn't call it addictive. its about the only relatively safe drug that I know of that helps with opiate withdrawals. It a godsend for many with neuropathic pain.
Hi there! I would like to chime in here and tell you of my experience with Neurontin. I am actually thankful for it, I have osteonecrosis in my jawbones and can literally feel the nerves jumping and it causes a lot of pain. I have noticed the Neurontin takes a while to kick in, for me like a few days, I do not take it regularly as I am not sure of the addiction part of it but I can tell you that when I do take it , I take 300mgs 3 times a day, for me it really calms those jumping nerves. I maybe will get one small prescription a month for the time being. Also, for me I do not feel any "high" or "euphoric"feelings.
Hope this helps
I have been prescribed gababpentin for years for chronic pain. It is very easy to abuse because it can cause euphoric feelings IF not taken as prescribed. I have been there done that and haven't taken it in two months because I went through my three months supply in one. I was trying to use it to stop the suboxone on my own. It just caused me more wds. I would take about 2400mgs at a time. Took a long time to create the tolerance. I would just be highly aware if you decide to take it. Coming up on my refill and am staying away from it. I hope
I take Gabapentin (generic) for nerve pain. It does NOT get me "high" although the first time I ever took it I felt very wobbly....it wasn't a pleasant feeling, and it went away after that first dose.
It helps me tremendously with my condition, however stopping it suddenly can increase risk of seizure. Although not common, it is wise to taper down from it.
Hope this helps.
thank you for the responses, it is hard to debate with a Doctor about if drugs are addicting or not, they are well educated , but a lot of us are educated in life & culture (drug) to a different extent.I am Not very trusting when i am assured a drug is not addicting.
I know this Doctor from the recovery community , that is one reason i use his services, he is also a friend in this small community.
I will have to think hard and long on this one, i handle pain well, but it does get bad when it wakes one up at night.I have to accept that this is part of aging and the consequences of living hard, (car accidents and loss of motor skills while high and drunk) we really do reap what we sow.
I dont want to be negative though, it could be so much worse and is for many, i am grateful for life:)
I started taking gabapentin 6 months ago. I hate taking it. To me it's a nasty drug, but I still take it, for now. Have pain issues and it helps. It's pretty much divided on whether it's addictive or not. The textbooks say yes, but most people I have heard from didn't have a problem stopping it. it helped me with Valium withdrawal.
Was originally Rx'd 900mg, but never took that much. Now taking 200mg at night only for sleep. If I had it to do over again I would still take it, but not lightly.
All the best to you!
Barry
Hi Trev. I have used this drug but never like you are suppose to Obviously it can be abused This is the drug I was taking when I was drinking with percs then tripped too the otherside.. I do know that you have to taper it to get off it. It helps a lot with opiate wd. and yes I think you can feel it when taking it, it alters out brain for sure. Now I have heard good things about it from peps that have used it. For me I would pass but I'm not walking on your legs.. sorry I'm not more help I hope someone else comes along with another perspective. warmly, lesa
