opiates - how long before it gets better ???

by who3v3r, May 03, 2009 02:45PM
I've just been going through the posts and feel better about quitting now. I've been on opiates (the prepration is called darvon and contains 65 mg dextropropoxyphene) for just over an year now and have tried quitting unsuccessfully a couple of times. I've been off almost 5 days now (which is the longest through the past 12 months) and I can feel things getting better - I feel okay today I was superdepressed last night. The worst part though is that I can't manage to sleep for over 2-3 hours a day and that also means I feel more tired due to lack of sleep. Cramps are managable because they go away after a while (although only to start again later). Also, I'm recentley out of work which means I have a lot of time on my hands...

I used to take around 15 pills a day (8+7... thats a lot I Know!).. and have gone 'cold turkey' now because I know it won't work any other way for me. Any suggestions/advice on how long it will take before I get back.

One thing even tho darvon is addictive its not as bad as some of the other things. You should be thur the worst, sleep will come back fairly fast now, if you have any in the house get rid of them flush them now!! Get plenty of exercise it will get your mind off w/d and help with depression and sleep it is just good all around. Keep asking ?s on here reading post. Today is a little slow there wiil be more along to answer some of your ? be good and good luck we have all been right where you are now so we will help all we can. outotown aka Aaron

Yes, the sleep will come back, it's just the w/d that has kinda messed up the sleep routine and it will take a little time.  Some benadryl, or nitetime cold med may help some with the sleep, please don't overuse it tho. Or maybe some melatonin, unless you are taking an antidepressant.  I am so glad that you have made it thru the hardest part of w/d,,,,be aware of the emotions,  sometimes it can be a mind-game with staying off the opiates.  Just know that you are clean and be determined to stay that way.  Congrats on the 5 days!!! You can do this!!!

I Know about the mind games! I almost convinced myself it was okay to take 5-6 a day as I read somewhere you can safely consume 390 mg of dextropoxyphene (6 darvons) a day !! But knowing myself that'd be disastrous ... just gotta keep my head down
