oxycodone detox advice

I have been on heavy doses of prescribed oxycodone for car accident and multiple neck surgeries for a year half now. Of course I started taking it for the pain but you all know how the story goes. So I decided enough is enough and started rapid taper 3 days ago. I went from my usual 135m a day down to 80 the next, yesterday I took 40m and today I am at 20mg. Needless to say I feel like poop but I am determined to do this. Any helpful words or advice would be appreciated!!!

hey believe, i'm soo glad that you're doing this! you are doing a fast taper so you will feel like a mac truck has run over you then backed up and ran over you again...lol.

i believe that we're all different and it doesn't matter *how* you get off the meds, only that you get off of them! yes, you'll feel like **** but i know when i was on my daily dose (20-25 pills/day), i felt like **** more! remember this is only temporary! i takes an average of 3-5 days to get the drugs outta your system and then you'll start to feel much better. everyday gets a little better than the last.

have you thought about aftercare? counseling? AA or NA? i see a counselor who specializes in addiction and he has helped me immensely! hang in there my friend and remember, we're never alone in our stuggles! i remember at one point i was having bad panic attacks and i Prayed to The Almighty to give me the strength to get through it and He delivered. i'm at 37 days now and life is getting better daily! God Bless.

Many of us found our pain was less once we stopped taking pills.  overopiates was just stating what she has experienced.  We also have some members who have chronic pain and they have decided to come off them for awhile to see just where their pain level is.  sara

You are on a very fast taper so the wd's will come faster for you.  The more you can get up and move around the better.  Gotta get your natural endorphins working again.  It takes awhile before you are feeling back to normal.  Your body is going thru some real changes and it needs to get used to not having any pain meds.  Hopefully you will find relief once you are off of them.  Many of us did.        sara

Thank u for the encouragement. I would never consider trading one thing for another. I feel like I am dying a thousand deaths as it is at times I couldn't imagine subbing another in to do it all over again. I have stuck to the rapid taper the past 3 days and just pray the night goes well and will drop tomorrow. I fear I might have to give up coaching my daughters cheerleading team for a day or 2 but hoping this all will pass soon and I can start to feel normal again. How long do the detox symptoms last??? I just hate that I feel like I am cheating my family cuz mommy is sick right now!

Not everyone can "ignore" their pain,  not for a day, not even for a moment.  And I'm perfectly "sober".   If you didn't know what your "real" pain level was when you were on opiates, then you shouldn't have started taking them in the first place.  They should only be used by people with real chronic pain. NOT by someone who twists an ankle, sprains a wrist, wrenches their back,  or even breaks a leg. Opiates do not mask chronic pain, they just lower the intensity of it.  It is pointless for someone with chronic pain to stop opiates just to see where their "real" pain level is. It's "real" all the time.

I  almost destroyed my liver with Tylenol,  and ibuprfen will burn a hole in your gut and cause liver troubles if you take it to much as well.  I took tylenol4s for many years, percs, then fentynol- which is really bad stuff-  Morphine is morphine, it isn't made to me a long term drug, good stuff for a few days max.  Oxy was and still is the best long term choice for chronic pain people. It's just the addiction part that ***** really.

As far as herbal crap goes, there is NOTHING on any herbal shop self that helps with this kind of pain, BUT, there is a lot of herbal stuff that does help with your overall health, which will help indirectly with your pain. The healthier you keep your body in general, the better.  You can increase your pain threshold somewhat by keeping yourself as healthy as possible. It depends on how much and how debilitating your pain is to begin with,  Myself, without oxy, It's unbearable, top of the chart level 10.  With oxy, I struggle along at about a level 6. And at times the oxy doesn't even help.

I was telling my wife about this suboxone, and how  it's used to help people get off oxy  and other opiates.
Being the beautiful woman she is, she grounded me right away saying, so what good would they do you? What's the point of switching one pain killer for another?

As usual, she's right.  But it just goes to show, that even us chronic pain people get tired of taking oxy.  But, there is nothing better. It's why we switched to oxy from drugs like morphine and fentynol in the first place- so we could live a more active, less drug induced zombie  life, which oxy does make possible.

Believe me I know how u feel. I hate the constant need for pain relief but at this point willing to take the pain over the shackles and chains of the narcotic pain meds. I guess I haven't really thought about how I will manage my chronic pain without my meds but I am wanting to try anything other than oxycodone. Did any herbal meds work at all for u and your pain? I have been increased my ibuprofin and tylenol amounts drastically since tapering but have to wonder how well my kidneys and liver are going to handle that everyday?? (One of reasons my dr's put me on pain meds was bc I was over using advil/tylenol) so any other suggestions on non narcotic pain regimens would be greatly appreciated...

Btw, I take 120mg oxy  every six hours. Your dose isn't very high, so If it works for you don't increase.  Your intervals are right. 8 hr intervals just don't work for chronic pain. You get a roller coaster effect. It's best to try keep a constant amount in your system as possible, then you can live as normal as possible.  Subs might make it possible to dose once a day due to their longer half life, IF they control pain as well as oxy. That might help with the dependency feelings.  I know i hate having to pop 3-40's every six hours (or one 40 every two hours, makes no diff) But then I have to take 25 other pills a day to stay alive as well, LoL!

Wow! It's like you share my thoughts! I'm the same way- worry about running out- taking too many etc.
I have chronic pain as well,  and will always have it.  At the same time I think about getting off oxy, but then what?  They keep me out of my wheel chair. Without them I can't stand the pain.  I was on fentynol for years before oxy, and I was a zombie. Couldn't  stay awake, and couldn't walk either.    I've been down the "herbal" road as well. My advise is- spare yourself  alot of expense and pain.
But, it would be nice to be able to 'take a break" from the narcs wouldn't it?  The problem is, there is nothing to replace them with. Oh, I suppose I could try some heroin, but I really don't want to be stoned, which is another reason I take oxy. I don't get zombied out on them.
These subs have a longer half life however. I'm wondering if they kill pain as well as oxy, and if I would need less of them for the same effect?  Do subs get you high? if so, then they aren't worth bothering with.

I am prescribed 15mg oxycodone immediate release every 6 hrs up to 6pills x day. Sometimes I would follow recommended dose, some less and other days I would take up to 9 pills a day. I am at this point just sick and tired of the dependancy on these, worrying about running out to early, the counting the,"omg I couldn't have really taken that many already" thoughts. I have been told by dr's that I will always have this pain and may need to be on meds the rest of my life due to needing more surgery but I know me and I know I am not on the road I want to be on. I want to try taking a healthier approach to the pain, herbal supplements, anything but narcotic pain meds. Thank u for the advice on cutting the doses and frequency times. But honestly I am thinking about just going cold turkey and bare knuckling it for a few days at this point. I am praying I will find the will power to do this!!! Thank u again and I will keep your advice close to me if I unfortunately find myself slipping back. At this point still trying to stay focused and only at 25mg for the day now. Gotta be honest my body feels like its been run over by a truck and I am on total edge...but still determined.

I've been on oxy for ten years, 480 mg a day for the last three. What puzzles me is how do you take 135mg a day? They come in 10, 20's,  40 and 80mg tabs.

what is your dose frequency?  How many mg's  every 6 or 8 hrs?   You'd feel like crap if you were taking  135mg oxy only once a day, as it has a 4.5 hour half life.  Terrible roller coaster ride! No wonder you get the chills!

Try breaking your daily dose into 4 doses a day,  then 6 doses a day as you start to taper, then 12 (every 2 hours)  It will be hard to cut the pills, but you won't roller coaster.

Thank you so very much for the advice. Its funny you mention the getting the demon drugs outta your system because everytime I get those cold chills outta nowhere I think its the devil trying to call me back! I too wonder if I am not just prolonging the pain by tapering and pray I had the will to just stop all at once. But as I said I am determined to be free of all this. I know this will not be easy but I am staying focused on the prize: free from the need for the drugs, sanity, money in my pocket and living a beautiful drug free life I once had. I cant thank you enough for your advice and your kind words. Its so nice to see I am not alone in this venture!

you're doing this! good for you! sometimes though a fast taper only prolongs the w/ds cause you're still hurting...almost like that band aid thing, ya know?

there are many things you can do to help aleviate some of the symptoms...look for the amino acid protocol, thomas receipe and epsom baths to help with the overall body aches.

one of the things that helped me the most was Praying. another was my mindset...all the horrible things that your body will be going through is it's way of purging the drugs outta our system--in a way, i almost welcomed it--i felt that i was getting the demon drugs outta my soul and everyday i felt a little bit better!

keep your eye on the prize! no more waking up dope sick, no more running out early, no more counting pills and if you're like me--no more money spent, it truly is priceless. good luck to you and keep posting! God Bless.
