painful marijuana smoking reaction - help!

by willis500, Apr 14, 2008 02:11AM
Hi there,

I'm 20 and have smoked pot on and of for a few years (since about 16), sometimes in substantial amounts.

I never had any noteworthy physical reaction (besides the "high") until last summer. I smoked a good amount over the summer, but slowly and steadily started having headache/burning pain in my head, neck, upper back, and jaw when I smoked. This painful reaction happens every time I smoke marijuana now. It can last for DAYS afterward--up to a week--depending on how much I smoke. It is very uncomfortable, does not really react to painkillers, and has gone on for almost a year. I have cut way back on my smoking as a result, of course.

I spoke to a couple of doctors who had no idea. I asked researchers at my school--University of Michigan--and they were clueless. I can't find answers anywhere on the web.

I'd like to be able to smoke without feeling the pain--any ideas? Yes, I know, smoking anything is not exactly recommended--but this strikes me as bizarre and it is truly horrible when it occurs. Any ideas?

More notes:

-I thought allergy medicine (Allegra, to be exact) might have been helping stop/limit the pain if taken with the pot but it does not really make much of a difference, if it does at all.
-This does seem to be THC based as it does not happen AT ALL with cigarettes, etc., and it gets worse/lasts longer if I smoke more (aka the THC builds up in my blood).

Thanks!
