P.S. Make sure that you do NOT have any pills on your quit day. FLUSH them. You must not have any "just in case" crutches. You are going to learn to walk without them, so there can be no going back. Having pills stashed away is too much of a temptation, and WILL cause you to fail. Just about everyone who keeps a pill stash relapses at some point. It would be a shame to relapse after making it for a month or more wouldn't it? It happens a lot. Avoiding all your old pill taking friends is also a must. A big part of the "aftercare" is realizing that your life without pills is a brand new life, and that includes brand new friends who don't take pills or drugs of any kind. This and many others are the reason why going to NA meetings is an important step along the road to recovery from addiction. I hope you consider it seriously. At the very least try to go to at least a couple meetings to check it out.
Again, Good luck, You can do this.
How much do you take a day on average? Before you get ready to try again, I recommend that you check out both the "Thomas recipe" and the "amino acid Protocol" at the bottom of the main page.
Pick up all the vitamins recommended, at the very least, and IF you are NOT taking any ssri's like prozac, lexipro, or trycylics such as amitriptyline, you should also get the amino acid supplements- 5http, L-Theamine, L-glutamine,
L-Taurine, DLPA (for pain management if needed) and L-tyrosine.
Use as directed on the amino acid protocol page.
For the first few days that you stop using percs, you may also want to use Imodium, both for stomach problems, and wd relief as well. Keep hydrated, and eat. It would also be helpful to eat foods which are rich in the amino acids your body needs to rebuild your neurons and neurotransmitters which the opiates have caused to go dormant and die off. You can find nutritional recomendations at the bottom of the page as well. You may not feel like eating much, but at least eat whats beneficial.
You should manage a LOT better using these things instead of just trying cold turkey with nothing.
After you get through the withdrawal part, continue using the amino acids and vitamins, they will help keep up your dopamine and serotonin levels while your body is healing and growing new neurotransmitters, which takes time. They will help you from feeling anxiety, depressed and tired.
That should take care of the physical part, but the psychological part, which is 2/3 of the struggle is up to you. You will have to force yourself to concentrate on positives rather than the negative. You mind will try make you dwell on pills, and feeling bad. You need to remind your brain that YOU are in control of it, not the other way around. You are quitting because you WANT to, not because you have to. And be PROUD of yourself for doing it. Everyday without a pill is an achievement. Reward yourself for every week you put between you and a pill bottle, go for a hair cut. A makeover will be spiritually lifting and remind yourself of the new you.
Good luck, I KNOW you can do this without much of a problem using these remedies. As long as you WANT it, you cannot fail.
Keep posting and let us know how you are doing, or just need to talk through a rough spot.
Do you have anyone that can be with you as you do this? There is no way to get past the withdrawals. They will be what they will be, nut the Thomas Recipe will help a lot. You can even start it a few days before you start the withdrawal process. Are you getting the meds from a Dr.? If so, perhaps you can talk to them about options. The hard part is mental. You will survive the withdrawals..you may not like it, but you will survive. The hard part is battling with your brain that only one will help...and you are back on the merry go round again. Your brain is lacking the connections that made it work as the pills took over the job. It takes time for those connections to get working and it is not just a few days, but weeks and months to get working. There are several good pages to read about that in the same place that the Thomas Recipe is posted (bottom of this page under most viewed health pages. Check them out they helped me a lot to understand how the brain works with drugs. I hope you can do this...I would feel better if you had someone to check on you or be with you as you do this.
