questions about narcotics

Hi.  My fiance who has chronic pain due to fibromyalgia, herniated disk, and some other issues, is currently on 320 mgs of methadone per day and 7 vicoden per day (prescribed by pain doctor).  She used to be on oxycontin before methadone, and oxy made her hyper/talkative (almost euphoric) and methadone makes her sedated/calm.  She also would take more and more of oxy when she was on it, but has no desire to do so with methadone. Does anyone know if hydromorphone (dilaudid) and oxymorphone (opana) have the same effects as methadone or oxy - in general, do they make you tired or hyper?  I realize everyone is different, but would like your opinions if you used either one of these meds.  Her doctor is thinking of switching her to either hydromorhone or oxymorphone. Are these considered drugs of choice? I know oxycontin can be a drug of choice, whereas methadone usually isn't. Thanks!

No offense percs and Vics have horrible withdrawl (withdrawal) symtoms (symptoms) if you take enough over a period of time.

I moved up from them,,Fentanyl and Dalaudid were my favorites. Both these scripts come with a sledge hammer

ya they do, 5 yrs and on my 3rd detox, sooo hard mantally, cravings are hard. of done plenty of oxy's, not prescribed, but i love snorting them, very addictive. its goal to kick them all, but i suffer from chronic pain, which of course has flared up today. but if i go get a script, down my throat they will go, no self control, even tried having my boyfriend hold them. but i've become a master malipulator. so today isnt a good one, i have serious and real pain, and of course no pills

Tink, you do know that narcotics Accentuate and create false pain even after someone has healed?
I also understand cronic (chronic) pain but there is a fine line there that justifies getting narcotics.

Hi there, I am on fiorinal C1/2  2 4x a day if needed. It has 30mg codiene & 50mg phenobarbital. I'm also allowed to take 30mg slow release dilaudid 2x a day if needed but I usually only take 1 dilaudid every other day unless I'm having a REALLY bad day. For me, I don't get "high". My hubby says I used to talk alot when I took vicodin, oxy's, ms contin & tramadol. I'm not looking for the "fuzzy feeling" that everyone talks about here. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, I don't really know what the "fuzzy feeling" is so I can't crave it. I just have a very high tolerence for some reason but my sister is a cancer patient & she too has a very high tolerencee I just want to be able to live w/out pain. That's impossible but my meds help me deal w/it. I don't know if I answered your ? but I found that the tramadol had awful w/d as well as the fentanyl patches. I would stay away from those if she can. Good luck to you both. ((((hugz)))) Jen

Thanks for your replies.  To clear things up, my fiance is NOT on hydromorphone (dilaudid)or oxymorphone currently, but she is on methadone (320 mgs per day; 8 40 mg tablets) and 7 vicoden per day.  Her doctor wants to switch her from methadone to either hydromorphone (dilaudid) or oxymorphone (opana), and I was just curious if dilaudid and opana are more in the methadone family or the oxycontin family, and if they make a person sedated or sped up.

My fiance is 150 lbs and 5'5" and she has a very high tolerance to meds.  You hear big men overdosing on 40 mgs of methadone, where my fiance takes 320 mgs per day and has for the past 6 months and has never overdosed.

Hi again, I understood your post & I realize she is not on the meds you asked about. I can only speak for myself about the dilaudid, I don't know if it's in the oxycontin family but I didn't like the w/d at all from the oxy's. I prefer the dilaudid. It doesn't make me "happy" or high strung & it doesn't make me slow either. It makes me feel "normal" becuz I can function & think. I understand that she has a high tolerence. So do I. That makes it tough. I really don't know about the amount of methadone that she's taking becuz I've never been on it but w/all the recent deaths, I know I personally would not want to be on it. It's just too scary. If she's not trying to get off the meds & she just wants to try a different med, dilaudid is strong and it works for me. I take the slow release so it lasts longer but I still need my reg meds in between. I hope that helps a little. Good luck to you both! ((((hugz)))) Jen
