by rlmclain, Dec 11, 2007 12:07PM
My husband just recently quit a 4 year lortab addiction. He was taking very large quanitys frequently. He has since then quit cold turkey but is now taking xanax . I think hes only taking 2 a day. What is he getting himself into mentally and physicaly. I was so proud of him for quiting the other but now im confused. I know the two drugs are very different.

from my experience on xanax's they suck i dont feel you have nothing to worry bout, but thats just me im also taking xanax's to help me sleep and maybe a half a one during the day they may me so sleepy i cant function, i think he'll be alright just keep an eye on his xanax pill count dont let him get addicted to them, some ppl do, but the change from numbing energizing pain pills to sleepy tired xanaxs usually doesnt make ppl want to continue with them after they are fully withdrawed

My experience has been that because I am an addict I abuse any and all mind altering substances.  Xanax falls into that category.  I did not even like xanax but when I took them I abused them.  Trading one addiction for another is something addicts do so I would watch him and make sure he is not abusing them.  Xanax addiction is dangerous.

No xanex!  I've been on xanex forever.  Recently got off the percocet.  It was nothing getting off the pain pills - it is the xanex that is the hardest.  Benzos require a long, drawn out, tapering process.  Right now I am trying to stabilize on the dose I am on since I've only been off the pain pills for 7 days.  If you want to see what he's getting himself into go visit Benzobuddies on line. There you will see many people trying to get off the benzos like Xanex (being one of the very worst).  I don't have any problem with people using valium for 3 days after quitting, or maybe even xanex (preferably valium), but more than 3 days and you can get hooked very, very easily.  You cannot go cold turkey off of xanex.  Please ask him to stop if he's been off the lortab for more than 3 days and on the xanex for less than 1 month and only taking 2 a day.  If he is taking more than 2 mg then the risk of seizures and brain damage is very real.  Xanex = Danger.

I agree with Blot that Xanax is garbage and in no way compares to what the pain meds can do, but when I was using, I knew a few people who just loved the Benzos (Xanax, Klonopin, Valium) and even more so than pain pills.

Watch the amount of use he has.  Another thing that I learned in rehab is that these pills, Xanax, work on the same part of the brain as alcohol.  Does he drink?

Addiction is such a funny thing.  Not ha ha funny, but ironic, I guess.  I took pain pills and drank, but absolutely detested muscle relaxers and benzos.  For me, the booze and the pain meds both produced "social energy" and euphoria, whereas the others just sucked.  If only we could get the true answer.

Alright, done rambling.  Best wishes.
