samE and L-Tyrosine?

What's the difference between these two? Anyone have a preference of what helps? I saw in the Thomas Recipe to go with L-Tyrosine, but saw some posts about same.

At what mg and how often do you take L-Tyrosine, Sam-e, and 5HTP? I started taking 5HTP first but the positive effects quickly waned. I just started taking Sam-e and was going to integrate L-Tyrosine soon. I am testing the Sam-3 dosage but have just upped it to 1200mg/day at 2x600mg morning and afternoon.
What doses do you take?
BTW, I am taking this for depression

What awesome info! Sorry took so long to reply, I don't have internet at home, and sadly, swiping my phone open and clicking through internet tabs just was too much for the little (ok, none) I had last night. I am on 100mg of Zoloft at night, and have been for eons, probably 7-8 years, so your recommendation is to not take either unless cleared by my doc? darn. cuz I could reeeeeally use a boost of energy in the morning...thanks SO much for all of your awesome input!

Hi there PorVida!!!  Good to see ya!!

I can only share my personal experience with SAM-E.  I take a brand I get at my health food store/ministry (from my Minnie Pearl girl lady...lol)
The brand name is "Doctor's Best"....I buy the double-strength 400.
I haven't had any negative side affects of ANY kind...and YES I have seen improvement in my moods.
Hope that helps....good to see you posting!!

Pat....we had a forum member on here months ago that swore by Rhodiola....but since it's an herb that hasn't had a lot of research history completed on it.....it's one of those that I personally would not take while taking an antidepressant.

Something I learned, that Gnarly has promoted for a LONG time....is that whey protein (which he always suggests buying the powder for mixing up a good drink).....whey proten elevates serotonin levels due to it's high tryptophan content but yet doesn't cause concern for those on an SSRI antidepressent having an interaction.

I was on one antidepressant or another for 12 long years....so when I got clean and went off that too.....I allowed myself some healing time before I supplemented anything.  I read the foods in the Health Pages that increase dopamine levels....and zeroed in on natural ways of getting tryptophan in me.....it wasn't until I was clean of opiates AND AD's for awhile that I added a lot of extra seratonin boosters.
Hope that helps....just my own personal experience~

Just to be REALLY clear...my first sentence above said this:

"First and foremost....it's really important to know you shouldn't take either of them if you are on an anti-depressant already"

So NO....you shouldn't take SAM-E at all while on an antidepressant.

We can't jack with our seratonin levels and other neurotransmitters by taking too many "remedies".  If you're back on the Ambien AND the Amitriptyline....you shouldn't take ANY of those unless your doctor specifically knows and approves it.

I know you've been having a really tough time Tooter....but, at least from my view on the bleachers....it seems like you are going on.. and then off the Ambien.... as well as going on... and off the Amitryptiline.  They both can aide with sleep.....but you will have rebound affects from stopping and starting the Ambien.  And your blood levels don't ever reach an "even" dose of the Ami if you don't CONSISTENTLY take it.  It builds.....and then it becomes affective.  The Ami will help you, Tooter, with your sleep, your neuropathy and your depression.  How bout just taking it as prescribed for a month or so and see how you feel?
Right now.....I don't think you know which symptoms are caused from what...the Ambien start and stop...or the Ami start and stop.  Know what I mean?

Hope that helps....I'm no doctor...just an obsessive researcher :)

Clean, I'm back on amitriptyline. This will be my second night. Will it hurt to take sam-e in the mornings? I took one this morning and I have felt terrible.  It's worse coming off ambien this time, That's why I taking the amitriptyline. I didn't sleep much last night and I doze on and off all day. I know that's not good if I want to sleep tonight,. Just couldn't keep my eyes open

First and foremost....it's really important to know you shouldn't take either of them if you are on an anti-depressant already.  You should clear it with your dr for interactions, etc. depending on the "type" of anti-depressant you are already on.

Simply put....they can both "be" mood enhancers.  L-Tyrosine is used more frequently EARLY in recovery.  And SAM-E later.  Not to say that some haven't found SAM-E beneficial in early detox/recovery.

The thing about L-Tyrosine is you MUST take it in the morning on an empty stomach.  It can enhance alertness and focus.  It is used more for energy levels where SAM-E is used more as a mood enhancer.
That's NOT all inclusive info.  Just trying to keep it as simple as possible.

If you take high doses...or too much L-Tyrosine you can be overstimulated, restless, anxious, have a rapid heart beat and experience insomnia.
Those are ALL things we DON'T want in early recovery....but we desperately want some energy.  That's why early morning on an empty stomach works best. (and beginning at a low dose at first)

The majority of SAM-E products promote themselves as being a mood enhancer.  However, in my long research after being on an antidepressant of one kind or another for 12 yrs....I was drawn to the SAM-E for several reasons.  My brand is "Doctor's Best" that I get at my health food store.  This particular forumulation says the following:  enhances mood and neural function; promotes joint comfort and mobility; and supports liver health and detoxification.
SAM-E has also been successfully used for those with osteoarthritis, depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia, bursitis, and many more conditions.

Hope I kept that simple enough...I tried awful darn hard...LOL

The most important thing to remember is NOT to take either of them (or 5HTP or St. John's Wort) if you are currently taking an antidpressant unless you check out interactions first.  Hope that helps you some~
