scared to detox

im a 41 yr old woman who has osteoarthritis, a pinched nerve, herniated disc, peripheral neuropathy, and the list goes on. i ended up being off work for 3 months after i did a workout w weights for my arm a few years ago. my doctor started me w perks and i have worked my way up to oxycontin. i still suffer on a daily basis and decided i was gonna do everything i could to find out exactly why this condition is getting worse as my new years resolution. i ended up switching drs. in the hopes that a second opinion might lead to a resolve. after transferring my new dr. informed me that i was addicted to this medicine, and suggested that i check in to a rehab facility to detox. I'm scared to death! after reading and hearing the horror stories about the process, I'm not sure wat to do! my first concern is if ill b able to function to care for my 5 year old and go to work. I'm not the main bread winner, I'm the only bread winner. and the second concern is, if I'm in pain w these meds, wat is my quality of life gonna be without them? could this medicine be making it worse?

Lilred, I'm a 71 female and I went C/T in Oct. It was tough the first week for me. I too have a lot of the same things you do. It got to where the pain pills didn't do a thing for any of my pain. So I quit. I hurt so bad the first week or two. ( I don't remember how long) But now the pain is not as bad as it was on the pain meds. The pain receptors finely healed and that takes a little while, but when they kick in you'll be able to see a lot difference. Pray you quit and God Bless you

I also have a lot of chronic pain, in many different places in my body. I was on a cocktail of oxis/trams and vicoden for years. But the meds never helped my pain, if anything, they made it worse. I was just feeling good and high, and the addict in me loved that. But I was tired of being addicted to these drugs and doing crazy out of character stuff that I was ashamed of. So, I just flushed everything I had one day, and went ct.  I'm not gonna say it was easy, because it's not. It will be a challenge for you for a couple of weeks, but every day got better for me. My pain Dr. prescribed Clonidine for me and that really helped me. Also everything ABN said is right on the mark. Take our advise. Have faith in yourself. You will not die from w/ds...believe me. Keep posting and let us know how you are doing. God Bless and Good Luck!!

"after transferring my new dr. informed me that i was addicted to this medicine, and suggested that i check in to a rehab facility to detox. "

What are you gonna do? Are you gonna go to a facility or try this at home?

" I'm not sure wat to do! my first concern is if ill b able to function to care for my 5 year old and go to work. "

Detox is horrible but so is the flu. Can you function while detoxing? Many do. Many still go to work albeit they have a really rough time. If your going to do this at home and you work a 5 day work week Id suggest timing your detox. Id start day 1 on your friday because although its bad...its not as bad as day 2 and 3. Then...you would return to work on day 4 which should hopefully be a little better. Many turn the corner on day 5 and are better.
Taking care of your kid will be hard so if you can...find a babysitter.

"I'm in pain w these meds, wat is my quality of life gonna be without them? could this medicine be making it worse? "

Nobody can answer what your quality of life will be. All I can say is almost everybody on here has a painful ailment that they are now coping with instead of taking pain meds. In terms of can the meds make the pain worse...the answer is YES. Your pain threshold is higher now that you have been taking meds so long. You will have to be off medication for a while to be able to truly evaluate where your real pain level is at.

If you decide to detox at home...check out the Thomas Recipe.
