Hi lisad259,
Have you tried the following? The BRAT diet those of us who have children are so familiar with? Eat nothing but bananas, rice (white), applesauce, and toast (white bread) until the diarrhea is under control?
Once the diarrhea is under control you can then add the following foods (no particular order is best) back to your diet ONE AT A TIME: pasta (not whole grain), oatmeal (not whole grain), potatoes (white), bread (white), Wait at least 4 hours after you eat a food before you declare victory. If you have made it 4 hours without diarrhea, you have probably identified a "safe" food.
What to avoid eating is just as important as what to eat. You probably should avoid the following until your bowel is more stable: red meat, poultry (dark meat and skin), ALL DAIRY, ALL FRIED FOODS, egg yolks, all fried foods, mayo, salad dressing, tartar sauce, nuts, avocados, potato chips, chocolate, cookies, CRACKERS (I know....Mom always told you soda crackers were a stomach soother...not so much), pancakes, waffles, biscuits, mashed potatoes, and ANYTHING with more than a tiny bit of fat.
Other items to avoid are artificial sweeteners of all kinds (commonly found in diet sodas, products labeled as low calorie, etc,), alcohol, artificial fats (Olestro), and MSG.
You need to stay hydrated so drink plenty of water. avoid soda and ANY CAFFEINATED drinks as these function as weak diuretics ("fluid pills") that cause you to lose water from your body by increasing the volume and frequency of urination and you need to hold on to that water right now. Dehydration alone can cause some pretty nasty symptoms most people are not aware of. Fatigue, headache, general malaise, etc. The actual cause of a "hangover" is dehydration! If you start an IV on an individual with a hangover and deliver fluids to that individual the "worst hangover of my life" can be "cured" in 30 minutes.
The other "supplements" you probably need are a good Probiotic to replace the normal bacteria that are in a healthy persons digestive system as these bacteria are very important in maintaining normal function of the bowel. You may also try peppermint tea as it is known for its properties as a painreliever AND an anti-spasmodic.
Good luck and I hope you get to feeling better soon, If none of this works, and you continue to have diarrhea, I would contact the physician who prescribed the Suboxone and be put back on the smallest dose required to stop the diarrhea. I would then work my way off the medication in very small increments even if that means reducing 1/16 of a tablet per week. Just the fact you are giving up the Suboxone is awesome but you must balance your tapering schedule with your overall health remaining intact or you will have eliminated one problem and created another!
Have you tried taking immodium?
Hi,
