solution for the smoker & vicodin addict....

I think I figured something out that may actually help me quit my addiction to vicodin & nicotine and I wanted to throw it out there in case it could help someone else.
I have been addicted to vicodin for about 2 years now taking 5-7 750mg pills a day.  I have also been a pack a day smoker for a very long time.  Both addictions have been a nightmare to manage.  After several attempts to quit, and I mean SEVERAL, I think I found a new way to tackle this problem.
I am sure it is not going to sound ideal, and even harder, but I am out of options.
I have decided to quit both drugs cold turkey at the same time. Addiction is addiction and the worst physical symptoms are over in about the same amount of time, so why not just go through this hell once?   I tried this out today and found that the nicotine withdrawl symptoms covered up the vicodin withdrawl symptoms & cravings totally, except for the running nose.  But I can deal with that.  There is ALOT more support out there for smoking than vicodin addiction as well.  I am gaining most of my support for cold turkey quitting at www.whyquit.com.
Just an idea I wanted to pass on.  Good luck to everyone.  I know how hard this is and what a complete nightmare it is living this way.

I'm sorry I completly disagree.  The smoking I can see but not the vicodin.  You have to remember that these meds have physical side effects.  Quitting the drug just like that could be very dangerous.  Please consult with your doctor.  You know you could go to a detox.  They can use medications to detox you off the narcotic and I guess the nicotine while they're at it.  I would be very afraid for you if you just quit like that.

I want to lend my support.  I think the test is whether you actually can taper.  If the answer is yes (such as in the progress i have made so far in my taper from Opana) then keep with it.  But, if the answer is no, then CT is the way to go.  Logically, it works this way.  I just want to lend my support in what you are doing because I am in the battle with you.  And in 2012 we are going to have an amazing new sense of freedom we will truly treasure.  I can't wait to experience peace of mind again!...Marie

I absolutely agree with you.  Going cold turkey is the best way to deal with those two addictions because otherwise one becomes a crutch for the other.  I am an in or out kinda gal and once you make your mind up to be free-you've got to go for it.  Good for you!  Please keep us posted and let us know how you're doing....Lu
