Well I'm glad you came back.

Your post got 24 hits then you disappeared!

Your obgyn told you to stay on them, or a different one?

Are you getting by with no withdrawals on only 1/2 a day?

You really didn't have a bad habbit to start with and you sound fine.  Are you?

How many 30's are you taking per day?  Dose, time?  If you can reduce as much as possible?  Tell your dr. now and they can put you on methadone before the birth, which is safe for the baby (safer).  It will greatly help with your withdrawl and the craving for more.  God Bless you!  I will pray for you and your baby.  Good luck, let this little life be the reason to turn your life around.  Get high on life and the baby. Its a million times better than any drug.  And it Lasts!  and just gets better and better!  I encourage you to get in a church and find some friends that will love u for u.  And nomatter where you are or what shape u are in, pray to God in Jesus name.  He will hear you and help !!!

Im sorry, maybe my approach is not as "cushy" as needed, but I was just trying to state the facts.  Of course, it depends on the state she lives in, as I said a few times, I only know about NJ.  But I would think that any doctor who sees she is addicted to opiates, and pregnant, would be concerned.  Again, there is an innocent baby here, and as healthcare workers, we have to protect the baby, because the mother has choices, the baby doesnt have choices....see what I mean???  Of course, she should tell the truth.  Lying about this is just going to get more trouble.

Nobody is trying to scare her.  This is the honest reality of it all.  The baby's health is what is important.                   sara

Ali,
I am telling her to not lie and to tell her doctor, I cant imagine how scared she is right now no matter how she got to where she is. I would say truth yes but scaring the **** out of her to where she has no where to go for help NO. every state is different and as long as she tells her doctor they can help, Honesty is always best but in no way did I say it was ok to hide or not tell them in fact I have said tell the doctor in every post. NOt every hospital just calls the law or DCS when this happens, If you tell the doctor and they dont have to find out from this poor baby being sick that is totally different, And as of now I have not read about it being a script or not, If its not that would be a bad thing because that is drug abuse and not a doctor having her on it . But I totally understand what you are saying just trying to give her support and not scare her

With that being said, I fully understand pregnant women who need to take pain medications, because I could be one of them one day,  for all I know, but there seems to be a slight line between what is "accepted" and what is "addicted".  Im not sure what the definition of "addicted" means anymore....It is very difficult these days to tell the difference, and it seems that someone could cross the line between the two very easily.

I can't speak for all states, but I can tell you what we do at my hospital and all hospitals in NJ because I am the one that makes the call to Division of Youth and Family Services.  It doesnt matter if a woman tells the truth or hides (obviously its worse if you lie).  If the nurses tell the social work dept, that a woman has screened positive for durgs, be it marijuana, cocaine, opiates, benzos, heroin, whatever, The fact still remains that the child is innocent and because that child may be affected by whatever the mother did while pregnant, means we have to protect the innocent child.  Its not a matter of emotion here, its the law.  If she has a script for the pain meds, it could be handled differently.....but again, that is a decision that the dept of children makes. We have a duty to protect the child.  While nothing may come of it, we still have to make initative.  We would be fired if we let it slide.

When I worked in labor and delivery, we would run a urine drug screen on ANY baby showing possible signs of withdrawals from opiates... if you have taken oxy thru out your pregnancy then your baby will certainly withdrawal! Your doc needs to know before you go into labor so they can closely monitor your baby.

Baby withdrawals include:
seizure, rapid breathing, decreased muscle tone, increased crying, not eating appropriately (uncoordinated sucking), jitteriness

The dr wil put the baby on phenobarbital to decrease the chances of seizure, your baby will usually show signs of wd @ day 2- so you might have a longer stay in the hospital- but as long as your dr knows what is going on they can keep the baby as comfortable as possible!

Hi, I'm from the Pain Forum and just happened to come across this post.

I totally agree with everyone here. DO NOT let that unborn child who did not ask for this suffer. Tell the Dr. so that they can make the Baby as comfortable as possible. Please do this for your child........

Sincerely, Mollyrae

I'll chime in as well....definitely tell your doctor....for the well being of your child.  It won't be as scary as you might think...but the doc DOES need to be prepared...and the Nursery Nurses need to be watching for any issues.

Hang in there...and I wish the best for you and your baby.

Never a better reason to dive into recovery than having a new baby.

You need to tell the doctor the truth no matter what.  They need to be aware of this when that baby is born.                  sara

Not all states do that , One of my husbands family members took pain medicine while pregnant and they never knew, I think that she should be upfront with the doctor. but we also want her to  be able to get support here. If she is upfront with them and has been under doctors care with them im sure they wont take her baby. Its all about telling the truth

Different states handle things very differently.. Some states are testing all babies not just babies with wd syptoms .  Regardless of the state PLZ tell your doctor about your use for the sake of both you and your baby .

here are different states stances on this subject

Unborn Victims of Violence Laws:
Prenatal use of drugs by mother
10 states define substance abuse during pregnancy as “child abuse” under civil
child-welfare statutes: AR, CO, FL, IN, MD, NV, SC, SD, TX, and WI
7 states require healthcare professionals to report suspected prenatal drug use:
AL, AZ, MA, MI, MT, OK, and UT
1 state requires healthcare professionals to test newborns for prenatal drug exposure
when there is suspicion of prenatal drug abuse: KY
1 state requires healthcare professionals to report suspected prenatal drug use and
requires healthcare professionals to test newborns for prenatal drug exposure when
there is suspicion of prenatal drug abuse: ND
2 states define substance abuse during pregnancy as “child abuse” under civil childwelfare
statutes, require healthcare professionals to report suspected prenatal drug use,
and require healthcare professional to test newborns for prenatal drug exposure when
there is suspicion of prenatal drug abuse: IA and

That is incorrect.  Even if you tell your doctor, it is our job as healthcare workers to evaluate and call Child protective service in NJ..The laws may be different in different states.  If we let a child go home with a drug addiced mother, we would be sued.  We at east have to make he call, and then it is up to child protective services to mae the decision as to whether the situation is serious enough to intervene.

I suggest that you do a google search on newborns of addicted mothers.

I've read a few articles and learned that your baby will go through withdrawals.  I don't mean to upset you, but a couple of articles said that the withdrawals are different from what we experience, but bad enough for the hospital nursery to detect.

If you notify your doctor, then you probably won't get in trouble w/child protective services.  I do hope you had a prescription for this.

Best Wishes for a happy future w/baby!

Does your doctor know? You need to tell them so that they know how to handle your case and your baby. If you tell them you wont lose your baby but its important to be upfront with them. Are you getting them from a doctor?
