Ican see this from both sides. I was a junkie and now am a sometime pain pt. I think addicts can make it hard for other pts. and am glad to see them penalized for hot urines. I know a guy who has real pain problems but is also a drunken pot head. He is being terminated by his pain doc for his smoking-drinking and think it's of his doing. If you really need narcotics for pain then why would you jerpordize yourself by taking recreational drugs/ booze?

She was just a troll she probably came back to read everybody's reply and got a good laugh by making everyone upset. That is what TROLLS do.
Sometimes its best to not even respond to them.

Uh everyone knows this.   The person obviously said this to express anger and blame on somebody because they are fiending for pills just like any drug abuser.  She is just trying to make it sound like she has a better reason for abusing drugs then others.  Everyone has got their problems.  I know people who take drugs for emotional pain and they have way more emotional pain then some people who get perscribed pain meds for physical pain.  So what was the point of her post, it was just to point blame on people because she can't get pain meds easily right now.  So she was implying a lot in her post.

Whats your f**&ing point.  Are you mad because you can't get pain meds so your going to a forum where people are trying to to quit and tell them that it is their fault that you can't get pain meds.  Man grow up it is what it is.  Don't blame your problems with pills on us.  Man i feel no sympathy for you because your trying to blame this on others.

Hey one way all the post said is because of addicts abusing the system people with real issues of pain are finding it hard to get pain meds...........
That is very true today and the DEA is watching doctors like hawks.........

There is no doubt that you needed pain meds for your injuries. I know tonight is hard on you and your mind is going to be hard to shut down. I hope you don't really take too many tonight but I'm not here to judge you. Just to give support if you want it.
I don't have a shoulder. I lost my dad in Feb. 2005 four months later they found a malignant tumor in the large bone in my upper arm. I had four surgeries to remove the whole bone and shoulder joint and replace it with titanium. I still have use of my forearm and hand, although three of my fingers and my palm are numb. As a result I was put on fentanyl pain patches by a nurse practitioner. My surgeon and family Dr. wasn't aware I had been put on them. I had to go inpatient in rehab to have my bandages changed and for PT on my fingers. (the shoulder was a lost caused.) My family Dr. helped me taper off of the fentanyl which is 80-100 times stronger than morphine and it says on the box "not to be used for post op pain." I did a very long taper from 100mcgs to 12 and then off. I don't have any pain in my arm anymore. It healed and I can't use part of it but it hasn't taken a lot away from me. I can type as long as my hand has a place to rest.
So I do see that you needed pain meds. A shoulder hurts like hell when it's healing. I wish you the best. I never abused the patches so I don't have any cravings. I consider myself very lucky.
I hope is that you will heal and not need much for pain, also. I know your bitter and who could blame you??

You've admitted your problem, and that's the first step. I'm posting a prewritten article that I post for anyone who's looking for withdrawal information. It has some general info as well as the infamous Thomas Recipe. Read it and if you have any more questions, make a NEW post and ask. You've posted at the bottom of a older thread, and you'll get more answers by starting a new post. Let us know if we can be of help...

This is a work in progress...something I've been working on off and on for the last couple of weeks. It's not considered complete, but has lots of info from lots of sources. If any of the "old timers" have anything to add, let me know and I'll add it to the document. I hope to use this to post a general "how to" every couple of days or so.

Listed below are suggestions for detoxing and quitting an opiate addiction. They are just suggestions compiled from the detox plans of people that have gone through cold turkey detox before. They are just that, suggestions, and any detox plan is best when done under a doctor's care. Consult your doctor before trying any of the suggestions below.
This is prewritten for anyone who is beginning or planning on beginning a colt turkey withdrawal to opiates. This includes drugs such as tramadol (Ultracet and Ultram) codeine (Tylenol #3, #4), Darvocet, Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Norco, Lortab and derivatives),  Oxycodone (Endocet, Percocet, Oxycontin), Morphine, Demerol. Fentanyl, and Dilaudud. There are many other opiates not listed, so if you don’t see it listed, you can still use these suggestions if it’s an opiate based addiction. None of these apply to benzodiazepine based addictions. These addictions should never be dealt with by going cold turkey. Always consult a doctor for a detox plan for benzos.

First of all, opiate withdrawals are uncomfortable, but rarely life threatening. You may think you’re going to die, but most of the withdrawal symptoms are just very uncomfortable. Opiate withdrawal symptoms usually start 12-24 hours after your last dose. But, the timing of withdrawal symptoms depends upon the drug taken, length of time you’ve been taking it, and how you react to medications. The physical withdrawals usually last 3-7 days, with days 3 and 4 being the worst. Once again, this is all dependent on the person. You can expect these symptoms. Dilated pupils, diarrhea, runny nose, goose bumps, abdominal pain, stomach cramps, sweating, agitation, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, leg cramps, general aches and pains, and sleeplessness. This list is not absolute. You may experience all of these symptoms, only some of them, or other symptoms. Again, we are all different. Below is the famous Thomas Recipe. It gives some general information along with supplements that help with the withdrawal symptoms. The only thing I would add to this list is a blood pressure drug named clonidine. It effectively lowers the blood pressure and lessens many of the withdrawal symptoms. Most any doctor will prescribe it if you’re honest as to why you need it. Discuss dosages and frequency with your doctor.

Thomas Recipe:

1. Valium (or another benzodiazepine such as Klonopin, Librium, Ativan or Xanax). Of these, Valium and Klonopin are best suited for tapering since they come in tablet form. Librium is also an excellent detox benzo, but comes in capsules, making it hard to taper the dose. Ativan or Xanax should only be used if you can't get one of the others.
2. Imodium (over the counter, any drug or grocery store).
3. L-Tyrosine (500 mg caps) from the health food store.
4. Strong wide-spectrum mineral supplement with at least 100% RDA of Zinc, Phosphorus, Copper and Magnesium.
5. Vitamin B6 caps.
6. Access to hot baths or a Jacuzzi (or hot showers if that's all that's available).

How to use the recipe:
Begin your detox with regular doses of Valium (or alternate benzo). Start with a dose high enough to produce sleep. Before you use any benzo, make sure you're aware of how often it can be safely taken. Different benzos have different dosing schedules. Taper your Valium dosage down after each day. The goal is to get through day 4, after which the worst WD symptoms will subside. You shouldn't need the Valium after day 4 or 5. During detox, hit the hot bath or Jacuzzi as often as you need to for muscle aches. Don't underestimate the effectiveness of hot soaks. Spend the entire time, if necessary, in a hot bath. This simple method will alleviate what is for many the worst opiate WD symptom.
Use the Imodium aggressively to stop the runs. Take as much as you need, as often as you need it. Don't take it, however, if you don't need it. At the end of the fourth day, you should be waking up from the Valium and experiencing the beginnings of the opiate WD malaise. Upon rising (empty stomach), take the L-Tyrosine. Try 2000 mgs, and scale up or down, depending on how you feel. You can take up to 4,000 mgs. Take the L-Tyrosine with B6 to help absorption. Wait about one hour before eating breakfast. The L-Tyrosine will give you a surge of physical and mental energy that will help counteract the malaise. You may continue to take it each morning for as long as it helps. If you find it gives you the "coffee jitters," consider lowering the dosage or discontinuing it altogether. Occasionally, L-Tyrosine can cause the runs. Unlike the runs from opiate WD, however, this effect of L-Tyrosine is mild and normally does not return after the first hour. Lowering the dosage may help. With breakfast, take the mineral supplement. As soon as you can force yourself to, get some mild exercise such as walking, cycling, swimming, etc. This will be hard at first, but will make you feel considerably better.

I had to go to the ER for my knee a couple weeks ago. They x-rayed it and said I had bursitis. The kind that is chronic. In the past my Dr.has tried to draw fluid off and gave me a cortozone shot. Neither worked. Anyway my POINT is....the Dr. that saw me was very kind BUT I actually had to fight to get out of there without a script for pain meds. I even told him why. I have been taking advil and icing it down. Other times I use heat. Advil seems to keep my reasonably comfortable.

what's making it EASY for people to get pills and get addicted to them is partly doctors that just give the stuff away.

quit with the negativity.  not everyone here has a legit reason for being on pain meds but we're all addicts either way.  deal with it.

you can only hope they are NEVER in the position of being in terrible pain and sadly, having to use any means to get some relief.

(not to say all my actions have been so "altruistic") but i can say most have.

i would not wish it on my worst enemy to be in that position.  i'm sure none of us would.  it is about as helpless a position you can possibly be in...

I don't think jumoping on someone after they post their opinion or personal beliefs is the way to go.  Sometimes people are here beacuse they need help and they need to tal but they go about it wrong.  It's our job to extend a hand.
Itsnoteasy.,... tell me.  What's going on with you in your life?  What's your situation?  What are you suffering from and what issues are you having with doctors?
Maybe if we understnad where you're coming from, you canunderstand some of us and we can open up a line of communication.... I hope you give us a chance.
