ADDICTION: SUBSTANCE ABUSE COMMUNITY
support group / counselor

support group / counselor

I need to find a counselor or a group for support.  How do I find a counselor or support group in my area?  I do not want to consult my family doc.

Day 7...still hanging in there but its tough.  Will it become easier eventually ?

Hi, I'm in Australia so why on earth am I offering you advice in the States (I assume?) LOL but one suggestion is the internet - if you are interested in support groups such as AA or NA they often have their meetings lists on line, just type in AA meetings and your area into google and see what comes up.

Another suggestion is to look in the telephone directory under drug and alcohol services, if there are any rehabs or detoxes they are sure to have names of counsellors and alternative support groups.

I don't know how it is in the States, but here sometimes the community halls or church basements that hold meetings "advertise" them on the notice boards.

Finally, I often ask the universe or god or whatever name it goes by to send me the people or information that will lead me to what I need.

You are doing great to get to day 7, what a champion! And yes it does get easier, with all the withdrawals that I have done over the years I always kept thinking that this one will never end, but they ALWAYS end and one day you will wake up or be walking along the street or whatever, and you will say to yourself "Wow, I've finally stopped detoxing, I'm free".

Please remind me of the above when its my turn to detox LOL

I am lucky to get this typed before someone else says it..probably as I speak.

When I got clean this time I didn't know anyone in this area. I looked in the phone book..found a NA number...found a meeting..got there...found a sponsor..from there I asked around for a therapist. I had been in therapy before and knew what I was looking for. I got lucky. My therapist is a great lady. I think it is going to be a good realtionship.

Anyway, I got the therapist by word of mouth. I got the meetings from the phone book. Also, check the internet. NA has a website that can asist you.

Good for you for asking for help! Keep posting.

Thank You Thank You !!

I will do a search later today for for NA meetings in my area.  It took me awhile to tell myself that I was an addict.  It is going to be very difficult to tell a counselor the same thing.  I have an addictive personality and I always have. .  I smoke cigarettes (addiction), I was addicted to booze at one time, and now this.  I really need to find a way to deal with these things.  I want to stay clean and I'm going to try to get the help that I need to do that.  Thank you again. If it wasn't for this forum, I don't know if I could do it.

Here's a potential problem for me :  My husband lost his job recently and we lost our insurance.  We had great health care coverage up until that point  Before that, had I sought help with this, I could have gotten all of the help that I needed, for free, through my hubby's employer / union.  Not now.
What does it cost to get help from a counselor for addiction ?

Alex :  Thank you :, I've been asking God a lot lately for help with this fight.    And yes my friend, I will remind you when you need to be reminded.  Stay strong.

I did find a small list of NA meetings in my area.  Are there places that hold meetings during the week ? and during the day ?   Because of my limited vision, I can't drive at night.

Day 9 is almost over with and tomorrow is a new day.  I'm hanging on
