totally confused about my dose of methdaone...help needed
im on methadone maintenance for 17 years now, up until 2 years ago i was happy enough on 90 mls, then i started to reduce my dose, as my doctor refuses to, so my dilemma is i got myself down to 20 a day but still have to go the the chemist 2 times a week to collect and on those two days i have to drink 80 supervised , it leaves me feeling like **** and trying to find ways to make it wear off, then the next day im never sure if i need any at all cos of the half life theory, if i tell my doc what ive done cutting myself down to 20 he will put me back on every day at the chemist and its a fair bit away plus i have 5 kids
any advice on what the hell i can do??
had to drink 80 this morn and just waiting for it to kick in knowing what im gonna feel like is horrible

I don't know your medical system there, but I have seen this happen many times here in the US. I have seen people kicked out for demanding to taper down, their reasoning, the client is non-compliant with their recommendation. I have also seen clinics and doctors turn 180 degrees and start helping. That being said, I'd rather go to jail than be on methadone, I'd rather quit cold turkey 20mgs than keep taking methadone, and I know exactly what that means, but I am amazed at how much that drug affected me. I would roll the dice and demand to taper and be honest about you tapering down so far. Worse case scenario, you have to quit methadone as soon as you tell them, that would be bad, but not as bad as staying on methadone indefinitely, based on their idea of what is best for you. Just my opinion, good luck.

oh and made it through yest by the skin of my teeth having to drink 80, nose itching , talking crap u know the usual ....but not sure whether to take any at all today cos of the half life thingy ?? maybe 10 mls this morn and 10 later if needed??
ok so the way it is here once you are clean a certain length of time (6mths in my case) you get shoved off the clinic and your own doc (gp) gives me meth prescriptions to bring to the chemist , this is my own gp, i only see him once every 2 weeks and he gives me scripts for the two weeks as far as he is concerned hes keeping me on 80mls
see he has me on 4 Valium a day too (5mg) 4 times daily and hes reducing me on that first telling me thats more important than coming down on methadone even tho ive told him its making me drowsy and i really want to reduce > his exact words is Valium first laura!!
i think after Christmas im just gonna have to tell the truth ...weaver71 i dont know if its gonna be so hard coming off 20 but not looking forward to any withdrawal with 5 kids around me !

i had a serious cocaine prob too in the meantime and overcame it and the doc is oblivious to this!!

the methadone clinic cant hold you hostage. absolutely, you have to demand, is right for them to taper you. 17 years is a very, very long time.
you have rights as a patient. please do whatever you have to to get them to taper you in the right way. for you to taper yourself at home get to 20 mgs and then have to take 80mgs again is insane.
even if they do start to taper you from 90mgs at the clinic (pharmacy)
that will take many months.

I am on a methadone program in the US and had to demand to taper. My dr. said absolutely not I had to demand. I am at (7mgs) today I want to be totally off in 5 days I will jump at 5mgs all this because I have 19 s

Well this is just stupid! What a crap doctor. >:( I'm sorry for the harsh words. I just know what it's like to be you and have kids and want free of the drugs. Then have one of the ppl you're suppose to trust with your life screw you over! I live in canada and my little sis is on the meth program. I don't know anything about it,but I know it's free for her. Do you have to pay, I've heard awful stories about docs keeping ppl on for the money. I'm so so sorry you're going through this, I hope there is something that can be done for you! thanks Krissy, i wish i could tell the pharmacist but i know id be put back on daily supervision and i just dont have to time with 5 kids ....(3 under 5 at that)
i just want away from the stuff now i dont crave heroin so i wonder why he is so insistent on me staying on meth , i havent taken heroin in 4 years!!

Find a new doctor. This doctor doesn't seem to care about you at all,he should be encouraging you to want to quit! If that's not an option can you tell the pharmacist what your trying to do and only give you the 70mls to drink? Then down lower when you're ready? I'm sorry,I don't know when it will wear off? :(
